Chapter 1 - The First Domino

"You cancelled our reception!" Maya shouted, her voice cracking with pure disbelief as she stared at the glowing screen of the kitchen smartphone.
"You had no right to pull the plug!" Julian yelled, slamming his hand against the cold marble counter, his face twisting with sudden, raw fury.
"I didn't cancel your wedding," Eleanor said calmly through the speaker, her voice cutting through the panic like broken glass while she sipped her crisp white wine in her penthouse overlooking the sprawling city skyline. "I cancelled the luxury reception that I was entirely paying for with my own money."
"This is completely insane!" Maya cried, stepping closer to the device, her fingers gripping the edge of the counter until her knuckles turned stark white. "Invitations went out to two hundred people yesterday afternoon! The catering deposit was completely non-refundable!"
"Then perhaps you should have thought about the consequences before you and Julian decided to treat me like an unwanted stranger at your dinner table last weekend," Eleanor replied, her tone dropping into an icy, measured cadence that left no room for debate.
"That was just a heated family argument!" Julian shouted, leaning in so close to the phone’s microphone that his harsh breathing hissed through the speaker. "You were trying to dictate our entire guest list and tell us how to live our lives!"
"No, Julian," Eleanor said softly, turning away from the glittering city view to face the dark, quiet emptiness of her expensive living room. "You told me explicitly to remove myself from your new family. You said the house where I am no longer welcome should not intrude on your modern happiness."
"People say things they don't mean when they're angry!" Maya protested, her tone shifting desperately from fury to a pleading whine.
"I always mean exactly what I say," Eleanor replied. "And since my house and my money are no longer welcome in your lives, you are entirely free to fund your own party."

The call disconnected with a sharp, digital click. Julian stared at the dead screen in absolute horror before his phone buzzed violently in his palm with a text from the catering director.
