Chapter 12 - The Unwelcome Guest

Both Julian and Maya froze, turning their heads simultaneously toward the hallway as the heavy oak door swung slowly inward to reveal an unexpected figure standing in the doorway.

It wasn't building security. It wasn't a process server.

Standing in the entryway, dressed in a sharp, tailored cream-colored silk blouse and holding a sleek leather briefcase, was Eleanor Vance. Her silver-grey hair was styled in its usual sophisticated bob, and her expression was completely serene, as if she were dropping by for a pleasant afternoon tea rather than executing a midnight raid on her son's apartment.

Maya let out a sharp, breathless gasp, instinctively clutching her pearl necklace tighter as she backed away toward the bedroom window. Julian dropped the garbage bag to the hardwood floor, stepping out of the bedroom and into the hallway to block his mother's path.

"What are you doing here?" Julian asked, his voice low and dangerous, his jaw tightening as he stared down the woman who had controlled every aspect of his existence for thirty years.

"This building is owned by Vance Holdings, Julian," Eleanor replied smoothly, stepping past him into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. Her sharp eyes scanned the modern kitchen counter, taking in the empty smartphone and the general disarray of the room before returning to her son. "I don't need an invitation to inspect my own corporate properties at midnight."

"You have no right to just walk in here," Julian said, stepping forward to block her from walking any further into the living space.

"I have every right," Eleanor said calmly, stopping just inches away from him. Her eyes softened for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of deep, maternal sorrow that vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. "I came here because I wanted to see for myself if my only son was truly willing to throw away his entire future for a woman who only loves him for his bank account."

"She loves me," Julian said, though the words lacked the conviction he wanted them to have.

"Does she?" Eleanor asked quietly, turning her gaze past Julian to look directly at Maya, who was standing trembling in the doorway of the bedroom. "Maya, my dear. If Julian were to walk out of this apartment tonight with twenty dollars in his pocket, no car, no trust fund, and no corporate safety net... would you still be standing at the altar tomorrow afternoon?"

The entire apartment went dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen and the distant sirens wailing down on the street below.

May you like

Maya opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her eyes darted frantically from Eleanor to Julian, her chest heaving as she weighed the brutal reality of the question against the carefully constructed illusion of her dream wedding.
