Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

Julian stood in the dim lobby for nearly twenty minutes, pleading with his mother through the phone until Eleanor finally ended the conversation with a quiet, devastating finality. She hung up without saying goodbye. Upstairs in the apartment, Maya was tearing through their bedroom closet, frantically pulling designer handbags and expensive shoes off the custom wooden shelves. She tossed a leather tote bag onto the king-size bed and began stuffing it with gold-plated jewelry, receipt folders, and anything she could quickly liquidate at a high-end downtown pawnshop before midnight. Her phone lit up on the nightstand with an email notification from their landlord, noting that the automatic monthly rent draft had failed due to insufficient funds.

Julian walked back into the apartment quietly, his face pale and drawn under the harsh recessed lighting of the hallway. He found Maya frantically zipping up her tote bag, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a frantic panic that bordered on hysteria.

"We are going to sell the watches your grandfather gave you," Maya said quickly, not even looking up as Julian stepped into the bedroom. "And the diamond earrings. We can easily get ten thousand dollars cash tonight if we drive down to the financial district district dealer."

"My grandfather's watch stays right where it is," Julian said coldly, his voice carrying an authority that made Maya instantly freeze in her tracks.

"Are you insane?" Maya shrieked, finally looking up at him, her chest heaving as tears spilled over her lower lashes. "We have zero dollars! We can't even buy groceries tomorrow morning! We have a three-thousand-dollar rent payment due in less than forty-eight hours, and our landlord is already breathing down our necks!"

"Then we'll get jobs," Julian said flatly, pulling off his white button-down shirt and tossing it carelessly into the laundry basket.

"Jobs?" Maya laughed hysterically, a sharp, broken sound. "Doing what, Julian? You haven't worked a real forty-hour-a-week corporate job since you graduated from business school six years ago. You’ve been managing family real estate portfolios that your mother handed to you on a silver platter!"

"I have a business degree and a sharp mind," Julian fired back, his patience finally snapping under the crushing weight of reality. "We aren't going to starve, Maya. But we are going to learn what it actually means to pay our own bills without asking Eleanor for a bailout every single time things get uncomfortable."

"Don't lecture me about comfort," Maya spat, clutching her leather bag to her chest like a shield. "You brought me into this world of luxury. You promised me this exact lifestyle. If your mother wants to play games, we need to find out where her real legal vulnerabilities are."

Julian stared at his fiancée in sheer disbelief. "Legal vulnerabilities? Are you out of your mind? She owns everything, Maya. Every trust, every property, every corporate share."
