Chapter 3 - The Blocked Cards

The heavy oak front door clicked shut behind Julian as he stormed out into the dimly lit hallway, leaving Maya frozen in the center of the kitchen. Her fingers flew across her own smartphone screen, opening her primary banking app with a desperate prayer. She tapped her account balance icon, waiting for the secure numbers to load. When the screen finally refreshed, a bold red warning banner flashed across the top: Account Temporarily Frozen Pending Security Review. Her breath hitched, her lungs refusing to draw in air as she stared at the zero balance staring back at her. Eleanor hadn't just cut off Julian; she had systematically severed every financial lifeline connected to the broader Vance family trust, which apparently included Maya's auxiliary access card.
Down in the building lobby, Julian stood near the security desk, pressing his phone to his ear while listening to the automated voice of the credit card fraud department.
"We're sorry, but this card has been restricted by the primary account holder," the robotic voice repeated for the third time.
Julian ended the call in a fit of quiet rage, his thumb hovering over his mother’s direct contact number. He knew he was walking straight into a trap of his own making, but desperation was a powerful antidote to wounded pride. He pressed call, listening to the monotonous ringing tone drone on through the empty receiver. After five long rings, the line picked up with a crisp, professional click.
"If this is about the venue deposit, don't bother speaking," Eleanor’s voice was smooth, composed, and entirely devoid of any maternal warmth. "The contract has already been legally terminated on my end."
"Mom, please," Julian forced the words out, his throat feeling as though it were lined with sandpaper. "You can't just pull the rug out from under us forty-eight hours before the rehearsal dinner. Do you have any idea how humiliating this is going to be for us?"
"Humiliation is a powerful teacher, Julian," Eleanor replied, the sound of a porcelain teacup clinking against a saucer echoing faintly in the background. "For thirty years, you have coastured through life assuming that my bank account was an endless charity fund for your poor decisions. You chose Maya, which is entirely your prerogative. But you do not get to bring a woman into my home who looks me in the eye and tells me I am a manipulative tyrant, and then expect me to pay for the privilege of celebrating your union."
"She apologized for that!" Julian lied, his voice rising in panic.

"She did no such thing," Eleanor countered instantly. "And neither did you. You stood right beside her and nodded in agreement."
