Chapter 7 - The Digital Vault

Julian watched in horror as Maya confidently cited document numbers and trust clauses to an attorney she had met less than five minutes ago. He reached out and snatched the phone back from her grip, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached.
"Listen to me, Robert," Julian said, cutting across Maya's frantic legal theories. "Don't file anything yet. I need twenty-four hours to think about this before we cross a line we can never walk back from."
"Smart boy," Robert muttered on the other end. "Take the night to sleep on it. But remember, once Eleanor gets wind that you've even consulted an external litigator, she won't just cut off your credit cards—she'll write you out of her final will entirely. Think long and hard about whether a fifty-thousand-dollar wedding reception is worth losing a ten-million-dollar inheritance."
The call ended with a sharp click. Julian dropped the phone onto the bed, running both hands roughly through his short dark hair as he let out a long, shuddering breath. Maya stood beside him, her arms crossed tightly over her silk robe, her face hardened with stubborn resentment.
"You're actually hesitating?" Maya asked incredulously, her voice rising in pitch. "After everything she just did to us? She humiliated us, Julian! She canceled our life in front of two hundred people!"
"She's my mother, Maya!" Julian snapped, turning to face her with a sudden flash of anger that made her step back. "She raised me alone after my father died. She built this entire real estate empire from scratch while dealing with a hostile board of directors who wanted to see her fail. And we walked into her home last weekend, demanded she hand over total control of her guest list, and told her she wasn't welcome in our lives anymore!"
"We were stressed!" Maya cried, tears finally breaking free and tracking down her cheeks. "The wedding planning was overwhelming us! Everyone fights during wedding season!"
"That wasn't just a wedding argument," Julian said quietly, his anger evaporating into a deep, crushing exhaustion. "That was a character test. And we failed it miserably."
Before Maya could respond, a sudden, sharp rap echoed loudly against the apartment's heavy oak front door. Both of them froze instantly. It was past eleven o'clock at night. In their high-end downtown building, visitors never arrived unannounced at this hour unless something catastrophic had happened.

Julian walked slowly out of the bedroom, his bare feet padding softly against the hardwood hallway floor. He approached the heavy wooden door, peered cautiously through the brass peephole, and felt his heart completely stop in his chest. Standing alone in the dimly lit hallway was building security guard Thomas, holding a large, manila legal envelope stamped with the official red seal of Vance Holdings corporate counsel.
