Chapter 5 - The Hidden Trust

Maya shook her head stubbornly, pacing back and forth across the plush bedroom rug while tapping furiously on her phone screen with her thumb. "People with massive fortunes like your mother's always make estate planning mistakes, Julian. My uncle is a corporate restructuring attorney in Chicago. I called him five minutes ago while you were downstairs in the lobby."

Julian stared at her, a cold dread washing over him as he realized just how far Maya was willing to go to protect her ruined social standing. "You called an attorney in the middle of the night about my family's private estate?"

"Of course I did!" Maya defended herself loudly, stopping to glare at him. "She can't just unilaterally cut off a legally established family trust without triggering a formal review clause. If we contest the sudden revocation of your beneficiary status, the courts could freeze her entire portfolio pending a full forensic financial audit."

"You want to sue my mother?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.

"I want to survive!" Maya yelled back, stepping right up to his chest. "I am not going to let a bitter, lonely old woman humiliate us in front of our entire social circle and leave us sleeping on a pull-out couch in my parents' basement in Ohio! We fight back, Julian. Hard, and right now."

Julian turned away from her, walking slowly toward the large window that looked out over the quiet, wealthy neighborhood where Eleanor lived in absolute, untouchable security. He knew that the moment they filed a lawsuit against the Vance estate, every single bridge would be burnt to fine ash. There would be no reconciliation at Thanksgiving, no emergency inheritance down the road, and no soft landing when reality finally caught up to them. But as he looked down at his dead smartphone screen, he realized Maya was right about one brutal, undeniable fact: they were already broke, and the war had only just begun.

"Let me see your uncle's number," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of all emotion as he held out his hand.

Maya blinked in surprise, handing him her phone with trembling fingers. Julian dialed the Chicago area code without a second hesitation, listening to the line ring in the dark quiet of the bedroom. A tired, gruff voice answered on the third ring, introducing himself as Attorney Robert Vance—a distant cousin Julian had never even met, specializing in corporate asset seizure and contentious family trust litigation.

"Uncle Robert," Julian said firmly into the receiver, his eyes locked on his own reflection in the dark glass of the window. "We need to talk about my mother's estate."
