Chapter 7: The Armor of Small Hands

Healing from fourteen months of captivity and fear does not happen overnight.

For the first two weeks in the grand house, Leo remained hyper-vigilant. Whenever a door clicked shut or a car drove up the long gravel driveway, he would jump down from his chair, run to Clara, and plant himself firmly in front of her with his arms crossed.

Alexander did not force his authority. He cleared his corporate schedule, spending every day at home.

He ate breakfast with them in the small sunroom, taught Leo how to build timber castles with wooden blocks, and read bedtime stories about daring sea captains until the boy fell asleep.

One rainy afternoon in the library, Leo looked up from his drawing pad, where he was sketching a massive wooden sailboat.

""Dad?""

""Yes, Leo?""

""Are the men with the black suits going to take Mommy away when you go to work?""

Alexander set down his pen, walked over to the rug, and sat beside his son. He lifted Leo onto his knee, taking both of the boy’s small hands into his own.

""Leo, look at my hands,"" Alexander said softly.

Leo examined his father’s strong, broad fingers.

""These hands built a fleet of one hundred ships,"" Alexander said, his voice steady as iron. ""And every single thing I have was made to protect you and your mother. Nobody is ever taking your mommy. And nobody is ever going to make you hide in the dark again. You don't have to be the guard anymore, Leo. That's my job.""

Leo looked into Alexander’s grey eyes, let out a deep, shuddering sigh of relief, and leaned his head against his father’s chest.

The heavy, invisible armor the four-year-old had carried for a year dissolved completely into his father's embrace.
