Chapter 3: The Cold Basement Room

While the medical team rushed up the Merritt Parkway, Alexander followed Clara down the narrow service stairs into the sub-level of the western wing.

What he found ignited a white-hot, righteous rage in his soul.

Behind the industrial boiler room was an unheated, windowless storage room measuring barely eight by ten feet. Inside stood a rusted metal cot with a thin foam mattress, a wooden fruit crate serving as a table, and a small pile of children’s books with torn covers.

Sitting on the edge of the cot was a single toy: a small wooden sailing boat with a carved hull—the exact keepsake Alexander had carved and gifted to Clara on their last evening by the shore four years ago.

Alexander stood in the doorway, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails drew blood in his palms.

""How long have you been down here, Clara?"" Alexander whispered, his voice thick with agony.

""Fourteen months, Alexander,"" Clara said quietly, holding Leo against her hip. ""When Leo was three, Victoria’s private investigators found us in Maine. She told me that if I ever tried to contact you, she would use your family's lawyers to declare me an unfit mother and place Leo in a closed state institution. She forced me to take this job under a forged domestic contract so she could keep us under constant surveillance.""

Alexander stepped across the damp concrete floor. He wrapped his arms around Clara and his son, burying his face into Leo’s hair, weeping bitter, burning tears of shame and grief.

""I didn't know, Clara,"" Alexander choked out. ""God forgive me... I didn't know. But I swear on my life, you will never spend another second in the dark.""
