Chapter 2: The Eyes of the Heir

The grand foyer fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Alexander turned back to the floor. Without regard for his four-thousand-dollar suit, he dropped to both knees directly onto the cold marble, bringing his face level with the trembling child.

""What is your name, son?"" Alexander asked, his voice unexpectedly soft, trembling with a tenderness no board member had ever witnessed.

""Leo,"" the boy answered, his arms remaining crossed, his lower lip quivering despite his brave posture. ""Leo Nolan. Don't you hurt my mommy!""

Alexander looked at Clara.

Her face was thin, hollowed by exhaustion, her hands rough and red from chemical cleaning solvents. Four years ago, before Alexander was called away to oversee a catastrophic shipping salvage operation in Singapore for six months, Clara had been an assistant curator at the Greenwich Historical Archive. They had shared a brief, deeply tender relationship.

When Alexander returned, Victoria—his family’s hand-picked socialite candidate—had presented him with certified clinic termination records, swearing that Clara had accepted a financial settlement and terminated the pregnancy before disappearing to California.

Alexander reached out with a trembling hand, gently brushing a lock of blonde hair from Leo’s forehead.

""Call Dr. Harrison at Columbia Presbyterian immediately,"" Alexander ordered without looking up at the guards. ""I want an expedited forensic genetic panel administered in this room within twenty minutes. If anyone attempts to leave this property, lock the main perimeter gates.""

Victoria rushed down the remaining stairs, her satin train sweeping frantically behind her. ""Alexander, this is an insult! You are taking the word of a common cleaner over your fiancé! I have an appointment with the wedding planner in an hour!""

Alexander rose slowly to his full height, turning to face her.

""If that DNA test comes back negative, Victoria, you have my full apology,"" Alexander said with icy calm. ""If it comes back positive... you will spend the rest of your life answering to a federal prosecutor for kidnapping, fraud, and human trafficking.""

Victoria backed away, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her silk evening clutch onto the stone.
