Chapter 5: The Severed Engagement
At 10:30 PM, Victoria Kensington was escorted into the grand library by two Greenwich police detectives.
She had changed into a tailored designer coat, but her eyes were wild, her mascara smeared, her aristocratic composure completely shattered.
""Alexander, please..."" Victoria begged, falling to her knees before his desk. ""My father was putting pressure on me! The Kensington family was facing bankruptcy... we needed the Sterling merger! I did it for us! I wanted us to have our own family without the baggage of your past!""
Alexander looked down at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
""A child is not baggage, Victoria,"" Alexander said, his voice echoing with absolute moral finality. ""A child is a sacred life. You starved my son in a basement so you could wear a diamond ring to country club galas.""
Alexander reached down, taking her left hand, and smoothly pulled the three-carat diamond engagement ring from her finger.
He tossed the ring onto the desk like a piece of worthless gravel.
""Your vehicle lease is terminated. Your credit lines through Sterling Bank are closed. Your father's firm has been removed from our logistics board,"" Alexander commanded. ""Detectives, take this criminal out of my home.""
