Chapter 11: The Harbor at Martha’s Vineyard

In May, to escape the media frenzy and celebrate the arrival of spring, Alexander took Clara and Leo to his family’s private coastal estate on Martha’s Vineyard.

*The Osprey Bluff* sat on a dramatic granite headland overlooking the Atlantic Ocean—thirty acres of wild beach plums, rolling sand dunes, and a weathered cedar-shingle manor with wide wrap-around porches facing the rolling blue waves.

The ocean breeze was crisp, carrying the scent of salt spray and blooming sea roses.

Leo ran through the sandy grass wearing yellow rubber boots, holding a wooden toy sailboat Alexander had carved for him, chasing the receding waves with fearless, unrestrained laughter.

Alexander and Clara walked hand in hand along the shoreline, watching their son explore the tide pools.

""I used to dream of showing him the ocean, Alexander,"" Clara said, looking out over the sparkling water. ""When we were in that dark basement, I would tell him stories about white sails and blue water.""

Alexander pulled her gently against his side, kissing her temple.

""The ocean was always waiting for you, Clara,"" Alexander whispered. ""And so was I.""

Leo came running up the sand, holding out a smooth, iridescent white sea-glass stone in his small palm.

""Look, Dad! Look, Mom! I found a diamond for our house!""

Alexander knelt in the wet sand, scooping both Clara and his son into a fierce, loving embrace as the Atlantic tide washed gently over their feet.
