Chapter 9 - The Hidden Vault

The heavy thud of boots in the kitchen overhead made both sisters freeze.

"Mrs. Vance?" Detective Miller’s voice echoed down the back hallway, sounding much closer than before. "Are you down there?"

Elena swallowed hard, her chest heaving as the weight of Clara’s words crashed down upon her. Every memory of that terrible night five years ago—the cold hospital room, the sterile white sheets, the doctor’s hollow condolences—flashed through her mind, rewritten in an instant by a terrifying new reality.

"We have to go down there," Elena whispered, making up her mind with a fierce, desperate resolve. She grabbed Clara’s arm. "Open the vault, Clara. Now."

Clara nodded, her hands shaking as she inserted the heavy brass key into the old iron lock concealed behind a wooden panel in the basement wall. With a heavy, metallic click, the stone wall swung inward, revealing a small, climate-controlled room illuminated by a single overhead bulb.

Dust motes danced in the pale light as the two women stepped inside. The room was lined with metal filing cabinets and shelves stacked with cardboard boxes.

"Look in the red binder," Clara urged, rushing over to the nearest metal desk and pulling open a drawer. "File 407. That’s where he kept the hospital transfers."

Elena hurried to the desk, her fingers trembling as she sifted through the thick folders. The air in the underground room felt thick, almost impossible to breathe, as if the very walls were closing in on them.

She pulled out a heavy red binder labeled Vanderbilt Holdings: Confidential. Flipping it open, her eyes scanned the typewritten pages until they landed on a birth certificate dated five years ago.

The name on the document was her own. The status listed was Live Birth. And below it was a transfer order signed by Dr. Sterling, reassigning custody to a private overseas adoption agency owned by none other than Julian Vance himself.

Elena let out a choked gasp, dropping the binder onto the concrete floor.

"He sold my child," Elena whispered, her voice dead and hollow. "He took my baby and told me it died, just to control the family estate."

"And he’s not finished," Clara said grimly, holding up a second file. "Look at this one. It’s about your current son. The transfer papers for him are dated for tonight."

Before Elena could process the fresh horror, the heavy iron door of the vault swung open wider, flooding the small room with harsh white light.
