Chapter 3 - Footsteps in the Hall

The dull thud from the master bedroom shattered the fragile tension in the nursery, freezing all three women in their respective places. Elena turned her head sharply toward the hallway, her fingers curling tightly into the red silk of her robe.
"Stay here," Elena commanded in a harsh whisper, though whether she was speaking to Clara the maid or her sister Clara remained unclear.
Elena stepped out of the bright, sunlit nursery and onto the cool hardwood of the corridor. The Vanderbilt estate was usually a sanctuary of absolute quiet, a sprawling monument to her husband Julian’s immense wealth and calculated privacy. Yet today, every creak of the floorboards felt like a threat.
She walked slowly toward the master suite, her bare feet making no sound against the Persian runner. The heavy oak door was ajar, a sliver of darkness cutting across the white molding.
"Julian?" Elena called out, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound commanding.
There was no answer, only the faint rustle of heavy fabric and the subtle click of a lock turning from the inside. Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs as she reached out and pushed the heavy door open wider.
The room was empty, save for the massive mahogany four-poster bed and the sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains. But the walk-in closet door was ajar, and a familiar leather briefcase sat abandoned on the edge of the mattress.
Elena crossed the room with hurried steps, peering into the dim interior of the walk-in closet. Rows of tailored suits hung in perfect order, but on the floor near Julian’s shoe rack lay a discarded medical syringe, its plastic plunger depressed all the way.
She gasped, stumbling backward until her spine hit the edge of the dresser. Julian was a successful pharmaceutical executive, but he had no reason to keep sedatives in their private living quarters, let alone loose in a closet.
A sudden movement in the hallway caught her eye. She whipped around to see her sister Clara hurrying past the doorway, her ivory blazer catching the dim light.
"Clara, wait!" Elena called out, abandoning the bedroom and chasing after her sister.
She caught up to Clara near the top of the grand staircase, grabbing her firmly by the arm.
"What do you know about that syringe in the closet?" Elena demanded, her eyes blazing with a mixture of fear and betrayal.
Clara turned slowly, her face paler than before, and pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket.

"Julian isn't who you think he is," Clara whispered, unfolding the paper to reveal a bank statement. "And he hasn't been paying for our son's trust fund."
