Chapter 14 - The Runway Showdown

The private jet sat on the tarmac of the Vanderbilt airstrip, its twin engines whining at a high pitch that vibrated through the cool night air. The sleek white-and-silver fuselage gleamed under the harsh floodlights of the hangar, the cabin door standing wide open with the boarding stairs extended.

Julian stood near the base of the stairs, turning back to face them as Elena and Detective Miller broke through the tree line and stepped onto the open runway.

"Stay back, Detective!" Julian shouted over the roar of the engines, holding a heavy black revolver aimed directly at the ground. "One more step and I swear I'll board this plane and you'll never see your precious son or those files again!"

Detective Miller drew his weapon, taking cover behind a low concrete fuel barrier.

"Drop the weapon, Vance! You're completely surrounded!" the detective yelled back, his voice straining to carry over the jet wash.

Elena didn't take cover. She walked right past the detective, stepping boldly out onto the open tarmac with her red silk robe billowing behind her in the jet stream.

"You're not going anywhere, Julian," Elena said, her voice cutting through the roar of the engines with absolute clarity.

Julian lowered the gun slightly, a bitter, desperate smile twisting his features.

"You think you’ve won, Elena?" Julian laughed maniacally, taking a step backward onto the metal stairs. "You have no idea what your family's money really built. Those trusts were funded by things you don't even want to imagine."

Elena stopped just a few yards away from him, her dark eyes blazing with unyielding fury.

"I know enough," Elena said coldly. "I know you're a coward who preys on families."

Julian raised the gun, his finger tightening on the trigger just as a sharp screech of tires echoed from the perimeter road behind the hangar.
