Chapter 11 - The Iron Door

The heavy iron door of the vault slid along its steel tracks with a grinding screech, drowning out the wailing security alarms. Detective Miller lunged forward, throwing his shoulder against the narrowing gap, but the hydraulic mechanism was too powerful.

With a final, echoing thud, the vault door slammed shut, and the heavy lock engaged from the outside with a definitive click. Total darkness swallowed the room for a fraction of a second before the emergency backup lighting flickered to life, casting an eerie, blood-red glow across the stone walls.

"Damn it!" Detective Miller cursed, slamming his fist against the reinforced steel door. He turned around, his professional composure finally cracking under the pressure. "Vance! Override the system!"

Julian stood calmly in the center of the red-lit room, his cuffed hands resting comfortably in front of him. He didn't look worried in the least.

"I'm afraid I don't have the master code anymore, Detective," Julian said smoothly, his voice dripping with false regret. "The smart-home system is tied to an off-site server managed by my associates. Once a lockdown is triggered, not even I can reverse it from the inside."

Elena ignored the men entirely. She rushed over to the metal desk, her hands frantically searching through the scattered papers in the dim red light.

"There has to be a manual override," Elena muttered to herself, tossing files aside. "Clara said he kept everything down here. There has to be a physical backup switch for the ventilation and doors."

Clara knelt beside her, wiping dust from her face, her hands trembling as she helped sift through the bottom drawer of the metal desk.

"Look for a copper lever," Clara whispered urgently. "Behind the primary circuit panel on the left wall."

Elena scrambled across the concrete floor, ignoring the dirt staining her red silk robe. She reached the metal circuit box mounted near the corner and wrenched the cover off with a sharp metallic clatter. Inside lay a complex tangle of wires and a heavy copper switch labeled Manual Bypass.

"I found it!" Elena called out, reaching her hand inside the box.

"Don't touch it!" Detective Miller shouted, lunging forward to stop her. "That box is wired directly to the main grid. If the voltage is unstable, it could trigger a localized explosion."

Elena froze, her fingertips hovering just millimeters away from the cold copper handle.

Julian laughed softly from the shadows.

"Listen to the officer, darling," Julian mocked. "You might just blow us all to kingdom come."
