Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Ledger

The sunlight filtering through the grand stained-glass window at the top of the stairs cast long, amber shadows across the polished banister. Elena stared at the document trembling in her sister’s hand, the numbers blurring together into an incomprehensible mass of ink.

"What am I looking at, Clara?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a fragile, dangerous hum. "Explain this to me right now."

Clara swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she pointed a manicured finger down the columns of figures.

"It’s not an investment account," Clara said, her voice shaking. "It’s a payout ledger. Julian has been draining the family trust for the past six months, moving funds into an offshore account registered under a name we don't know."

Elena shook her head, stepping back as if the paper were physically burning her.

"That’s impossible," Elena retorted, her voice rising. "Julian signed the prenuptial agreement. He signed the custody papers. Every cent of my family’s fortune is protected by ironclad trusts."

"Trusts can be amended when a person is incapacitated, Elena," Clara shot back, her tone sharp with desperate urgency. "Or when someone convinces a doctor that the mother is unstable."

Elena froze, the words hanging in the air like a physical blow. She remembered the subtle changes in her daily routine over the last few weeks—the strange metallic taste in her evening tea, the hours of lost time she had simply attributed to postpartum exhaustion, and the gentle, concerned reminders from Julian about her memory lapses.

"The tea," Elena breathed, the horrifying realization dawning on her with terrifying clarity. "He was drugging me."

Downstairs, the heavy front door clicked open, followed by the familiar, measured tread of expensive shoes stepping onto the marble foyer.

"He’s back," Clara whispered, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she grabbed Elena’s wrist. "If he finds us up here discussing this, we won't live to see the sunset."

Elena looked down the grand staircase, her fear instantly hardening into a cold, protective rage. She pulled her wrist free from Clara’s grip and smoothed the front of her red silk robe.

"Let him come," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. "It’s time we have a family discussion."

She marched down the stairs, leaving Clara trembling at the landing, and stepped into the grand foyer just as Julian removed his coat.

"Elena, darling," Julian said, offering a warm, practiced smile that didn't quite reach his cold, calculating eyes. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
