Chapter 13 - The Open Door

The cool night air rushed through the open kitchen door, stirring the white puddle of spilled milk on the tiled floor near the center of the room. Elena stepped out of the basement stairwell, her bare feet stepping carefully around the shattered glass as she approached the threshold.

Detective Miller knelt by the open back door, inspecting the latch with a small pocket flashlight.

"It was picked from the inside," the detective noted, his voice grim. "He had a spare pick set hidden behind the doorframe. He never intended to stay locked in that vault."

Elena looked out into the sprawling, manicured gardens of the Vanderbilt estate. The moon was high and bright, casting silver light across the dark rows of hedges and the private airstrip visible in the distance near the edge of the property line.

"He’s heading for the hangar," Elena said with sudden, chilling certainty. "He has a private charter scheduled to leave for the Caymans tonight at midnight."

Detective Miller stood up quickly, tapping his radio.

"All units, converge on the north airfield immediately," the detective barked into the receiver. "Suspect is fleeing on foot toward a private aircraft. Approach with caution; he is considered armed and desperate."

Clara hurried into the kitchen, clutching her ivory blazer tightly around her shoulders as she looked out into the dark yard.

"Elena, you can't go out there," Clara pleaded, grabbing her sister’s arm. "Let the police handle him. It’s too dangerous."

Elena pulled her arm away gently, her gaze fixed entirely on the distant glow of the airfield lights flickering through the trees.

"No, Clara," Elena replied, her voice steady and resolute. "This ends with me. He took my first child, and he tried to take my son. I need to look him in the eye when he falls."

Without waiting for another word, Elena stepped out past the threshold and onto the stone patio, ignoring the sharp chill of the night air against her silk robe.

Detective Miller fell into step beside her, offering a protective escort as they moved swiftly across the lawn, following the crushed gravel path toward the private hangar.

The low rumble of a jet engine warming up echoed softly across the estate grounds, growing louder with every frantic step they took through the dark gardens.
