Chapter 8 - The Basement Door

The faint, rhythmic tapping against the heavy wooden service door at the end of the back hallway sounded like a heartbeat in the quiet house. Elena turned away from the grand staircase, leaving Officer Hayes standing guard by the foyer, and walked cautiously toward the rear of the main floor.
The service door led down to the stone-lined cellars beneath the Vanderbilt estate—a sprawling subterranean labyrinth that Julian had converted into a private wine cellar and storage vault.
Elena reached out and pushed the door open slightly. The cool, damp air of the basement washed over her face, carrying with it the faint, sharp scent of rubbing alcohol and old paper.
"Hello?" Elena called out softly into the darkness.
A hand shot out from the shadows of the stairwell, grabbing Elena by the wrist and pulling her halfway into the stairwell before she could scream.
"Shh! Keep your voice down!" a familiar, frantic whisper hissed in the dim light.
Elena blinked rapidly, her eyes adjusting to the gloom to reveal Clara, her ivory blazer now stained with dust and cobwebs.
"Clara? What are you doing down here?" Elena whispered back, wrenching her wrist free and rubbing her skin. "The police are upstairs searching Julian’s office. You need to come out where it’s safe."
"Safe?" Clara let out a harsh, bitter laugh, shaking her head as she backed further down the concrete steps. "Nowhere in this house is safe, Elena. Not while Julian’s network is still active."
Elena grabbed the handrail, her patience wearing thin. "What are you talking about? What network?"
Clara reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy, old-fashioned brass key—the twin to the one the police had just confiscated upstairs.
"The safe deposit box isn't at the bank downtown," Clara said quickly, her eyes darting nervously toward the top of the stairs as heavy footsteps echoed overhead from the second-floor search. "It’s built into the foundation of this very house. That’s where Julian keeps the real files—the adoption papers, the medical records, and the truth about what happened to your first baby."
Elena froze, the blood draining from her face so fast she felt faint.
"My... my first baby?" Elena stammered, her voice barely a breath. "What are you talking about? My first child was a miscarriage. The doctors at St. Jude's confirmed it five years ago."
Clara grabbed Elena’s shoulders, her grip tight and desperate.
"They lied to you, Elena," Clara cried, fresh tears spilling over her cheeks. "Julian paid them off. Your baby didn't die."

Before Elena could demand the rest of the horrifying truth, the heavy thud of boots sounded directly above them in the kitchen, and Detective Miller’s voice called out through the floorboards.
