Chapter 12 - The Copper Switch

The red emergency lights pulsed slowly against the damp stone walls, casting long, writhing shadows across the cramped vault. Elena kept her hand suspended inches from the copper switch, her breath coming in shallow, controlled gasps as she weighed the deadly risk against their only chance of escape.

"We stay down here, we suffocate or wait for his associates to arrive and finish us off," Elena said, her voice hard and unwavering. "I’d rather take my chances with the wiring."

Detective Miller lowered his hand slowly, realizing she was right. He stepped up beside her, using his sleeve to shield his hand as he reached in to assist her.

"On three," the detective instructed, his voice tense. "We pull it together to distribute the electrical shock load. One... two... three."

Together, they threw the copper switch down with all their might.

A deafening pop echoed through the small room, followed by a shower of bright blue sparks that rained down like fireworks. The red emergency lights flickered violently and then died completely, plunging the vault into absolute, pitch-black silence.

For several agonizing seconds, nobody breathed.

Then, a mechanical groan echoed from the ceiling, and the heavy iron vault door slowly ground open, releasing a rush of fresh, cool air into the subterranean room.

"It worked," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief as she stumbled backward against the filing cabinets.

Detective Miller drew his service weapon, stepping cautiously past the smoking circuit box and out into the dark basement corridor.

"Stay behind me," the detective ordered, sweeping his flashlight beam across the empty stone hallway.

Elena stepped out of the vault right behind him, her eyes adjusting to the dim light of the basement. Julian was nowhere to be seen. The spot where he had been standing moments before was completely empty, leaving behind only a pair of discarded police handcuffs lying unlocked on the concrete floor.

"He’s gone," Elena breathed, a fresh wave of panic tightening her chest. "The lockdown was just a diversion to buy him time to escape."

Detective Miller cursed under his breath, rushing toward the basement stairs that led up to the main kitchen.

"Secure the perimeter!" the detective shouted into his radio. "Suspect has slipped restraints and is on the move!"

As Elena and Clara followed the detective up the stairs into the brightly lit kitchen, they found the back door standing wide open to the night air—and a single, familiar baby bottle sitting abandoned on the marble threshold.
