Chapter 7 - The Dropped Key

The junior officer straightened up slowly from behind the mahogany console table, holding a small, silver-plated key between two gloved fingers. The foyer fell entirely silent as he stepped forward and handed the object to Detective Miller.
"Found this near the baseboard, Lieutenant," the younger officer said quietly. "Looks like a safe deposit key."
Julian’s eyes locked onto the small piece of metal, and for the first time since the police arrived, his practiced composure visibly cracked. A muscle pulsed violently in his left jaw, and his breathing hitched just enough to betray his mounting panic.
"That’s private property," Julian said, stepping forward with a sudden, rigid urgency. "You have no right to search personal items not listed on the warrant."
Detective Miller turned the key over in his gloved hand, examining the jagged teeth before slipping it into an evidence bag.
"Anything found in plain sight during the execution of a lawful warrant is fair game, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller replied calmly. "Especially when it appears to have been dropped in a rush."
Elena watched her husband closely, a cold satisfaction washing over the fear in her chest. She had lived with this man for five years, believing herself to be his partner, only to discover she was merely an obstacle in a meticulously planned heist.
"Open the safe, Julian," Elena said, her voice cutting through the tension like a glass shard. "Or let the officers do it for you."
Julian slowly turned his head to look at his wife, his eyes devoid of any warmth or affection. The mask of the loving husband had melted away entirely, leaving behind a stranger driven by desperation and greed.
"You have no idea what you've unlocked, Elena," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low so the officers wouldn't catch every word. "If those records get out, you and your precious son won't just be poor—you won't be safe."
Elena didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her chin held high.
"I'd rather lose everything than let you touch my child again," she replied fiercely.
Detective Miller stepped between them, breaking the hostile eye contact.
"Let’s move upstairs," the detective instructed, gesturing toward the grand staircase. "Mr. Vance, you’ll accompany us. Ma'am, you stay here with Officer Hayes."
As Julian was led up the stairs flanked by the officers, he shot one final, lingering look back at Elena—a look that promised retribution.

Elena watched them disappear around the bend of the second-floor landing, letting out a long, shaky breath. But before she could even begin to process the moment, a soft tap came from the service door leading down to the basement.
