Chapter 9 - Shadows on the Balcony

The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, sealing out the storm, but the oppressive silence inside the grand foyer felt heavier than any weather.
Julian carried Lily up the sweeping double staircase toward the east wing nursery, ignoring the portraits of generations of stern-faced Vance ancestors lining the dark wood-paneled walls. Each painted pair of eyes seemed to watch him with silent judgment, reminding him that he was merely the latest occupant of a dynasty built on buried secrets and calculated betrayals.
“Daddy, can we leave tomorrow?” Lily murmured sleepily, resting her head heavily against his shoulder as they reached the second-floor landing. “I don’t like the dark downstairs.”
“We’ll leave soon, sweetheart,” Julian promised softly, easing open the door to her pink-themed bedroom and tucking her beneath the quilted white blankets. He sat beside her until her breathing evened out into the steady rhythm of deep sleep, smoothing her soft curls away from her forehead.
As he stood up to quietly leave the room, a soft footstep creaked on the hardwood floor just outside the half-open door.
Julian moved instantly, slipping out into the dimly lit hallway with silent, predatory grace. He caught a flash of dark fabric slipping around the corner toward the western corridor leading to the private family archives.
“Show yourself, Arthur,” Julian called out, his voice cutting through the corridor shadows like a blade.
The footsteps stopped. A low, nervous laugh echoed back from the dark curve of the hall.
“It’s not Arthur, big brother,” Katherine’s voice purred softly from the darkness as she stepped slowly into the amber glow of the wall sconces. She wore a sleek emerald silk dress, her blonde hair pinned up elegantly, though her fingers trembled slightly as she clutched a glass of amber whiskey.
Julian stepped forward, blocking her path. “You were supposed to be staying at the downtown penthouse after what happened tonight. Why are you still in this house?”
Katherine took a slow sip of her drink, a bitter smile touching the corners of her crimson lips. “And miss the grand finale? Julian, you really have no idea how deep the rot goes, do you? You think Evelyn is just protecting the corporate brand because she cares about stocks and dividends?”
“Stop playing games, Katherine,” Julian snapped, grabbing her wrist and forcing her glass down onto a nearby mahogany console table before it spilled. “Tell me what you and Mother hid in the sub-basement archive before I lose my patience.”

Katherine didn't flinch. Instead, she looked past his shoulder with wide, terrified eyes as a heavy shadow detached itself from the doorway behind him.
