Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Rain

The wail of police sirens grew steadily louder, cutting sharply through the stormy night outside the mansion as flashing red and blue lights painted the high arched windows of the grand hallway in erratic crimson strokes.
Down in the dark sub-basement, Julian lowered his bruised shoulder from the unyielding iron door, his breath coming in measured, controlled gasps. He knew Evelyn had locked him in to buy time, framing him as the violent aggressor before the authorities breached the perimeter. She was a master of institutional survival, having managed the family fortune through decades of scandals, recessions, and silent coups.
“Daddy?” Lily’s small, terrified voice drifted down through the ventilation grate near the ceiling. “Are the police here? Grandma won’t let me open the front door.”
Julian stepped back toward the desk, casting his phone’s flashlight across the cluttered surface until he spotted an old brass crank handle mounted to the side of the wooden shelving unit. He grabbed it, inserting it into a concealed socket beneath the desk, and turned it hard to the left. With a low, grinding groan, a secondary emergency exit panel slid open in the back wall, revealing a narrow brick tunnel leading out toward the estate’s greenhouse.
“Stay right there, Lily!” Julian called upward, keeping his voice steady and calm so his daughter wouldn't hear the urgency tearing at his chest. “Daddy is coming around the back right now. Do not open that front door for anyone, do you understand?”
“Okay, Daddy,” Lily whispered overhead, the sound of her small shoes pattering away from the heavy oak door.
Julian scrambled through the narrow brick crawlspace, his dark suit jacket catching on a jagged stone protrusion, tearing the fabric at the elbow. He ignored the sting, pulling himself free into the humid, overgrown expanse of the indoor greenhouse. Rain drummed heavily against the glass ceiling panes, filling the damp air with a rhythmic, deafening roar.
As he stepped out into the courtyard, two uniformed police officers rounded the corner of the west wing, their flashlights instantly blinding him as they raised their service weapons.
“Freeze! Don't move an inch! Put your hands on your head where we can see them!” the lead officer shouted over the storm, stepping forward with his badge displayed on his tactical vest.

Julian slowly raised his hands, the blood from Arthur’s shattered clock still staining his cuffs, knowing that the moment he tried to explain, Evelyn was already welcoming the lead detective inside the front foyer.
