Chapter 2 - The Scent of Bitter Almonds

Arthur gagged as the dark red liquid spilled across his collar, staining his expensive designer shirt a deep, bruised crimson.

“Drink!” Julian commanded, his knuckles turning white as he pressed the rim of the glass against Arthur’s bleeding mouth.

Grandmother Evelyn rushed forward, her beige patterned dress rustling frantically as her diamond pearls bounced against her chest. “Julian, stop this insanity right now! If you force him, you are destroying this family beyond any hope of repair. Arthur is your own blood, regardless of his foolish tongue!”

“Blood?” Julian laughed, a humorless, chilling sound that lacked any warmth. “Blood is exactly why he’s going to swallow every last drop of what he brewed for me. Smell it, Mother. Do you smell the bitter almonds beneath the vintage bouquet? That isn’t aged Bordeaux. That’s potassium cyanide.”

The color drained instantly from Evelyn’s face, her elegant posture faltering as she clutched the edge of the dining table for support. Arthur stopped struggling, his eyes darting sideways toward the shattered grandfather clock with a sudden, panicked realization.

“You’re bluffing,” Arthur spat, though his voice cracked with unmistakable terror. “You’ve always been paranoid, Julian. A victim of your own dark imagination.”

“Am I?” Julian slowly lowered the decanter, dipping a single finger into the ruby liquid before bringing it close to his nose. “The forensic chemist I hired last week isn’t paranoid. And neither are the financial audit reports I found in your office this morning, showing every single dollar you’ve been draining from the family estate to pay off your offshore gambling debts.”

Lily peeked out from her father’s shoulder, her big blue eyes blinking against the harsh chandelier light. “Daddy, is Aunt Katherine going to jail?”

“Katherine isn’t just going to jail, sweetheart,” Julian whispered softly, stroking his daughter’s curls with a gentle hand while keeping his eyes locked on his brother. “People who try to poison their own family don't get to walk away.”

Arthur suddenly lunged forward, sweeping his legs low to take Julian down to the floor.
