Chapter 13 - The Server Room Archive

The cool hum of industrial cooling fans filled the underground server room with a steady, mechanical white noise.
Julian slipped through the heavy fire door, stepping onto the raised floor tiles of the corporate server hub. Rows of black server racks stretched into the dim fluorescent gloom, their tiny green and amber data lights blinking in rhythmic synchronization. He moved quickly toward the main terminal console located in the center of the room, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced familiarity.
The screen flickered to life, bathing his face in a harsh blue glow as the login prompt demanded administrative credentials.
“Come on,” Julian muttered under his breath, inputting his primary executive keycode.
The system hesitated for a fraction of a second before flashing red: Access Denied. Root privileges revoked by master administrator E. Vance.
Julian didn't hesitate. He reached into his torn suit jacket, pulling out a small black flash drive that Arthur had slipped into his palm before they parted ways in the utility tunnel—Arthur’s emergency system override key. He slid the drive into the USB port on the side of the terminal.
Lines of code cascaded down the black screen as the override bypassed the primary firewall. A new folder appeared on the desktop, labeled simply: Project Legacy.
Julian clicked it open. Inside were three subfolders: Financial Audits, Toxicological Reports, and Surveillance Archives.
He clicked on the toxicological folder first, opening the high-resolution PDF file dated four years ago, on the exact night Sarah supposedly died of heart failure. The digital document loaded slowly, displaying the hospital letterhead and the attending physician’s signature. But beneath the official signature was a digital watermark—an encrypted audio file recorded from the hospital’s secure conference room.
Julian hit play.
Evelyn’s cold, precise voice filled the quiet server room, echoing slightly off the metal server racks.
“Increase the dosage of the cardiac inhibitor by two milligrams per hour,” Evelyn’s voice commanded clearly through the tinny computer speakers. “She signed the divorce papers and transferred custody of Lily to the trust, but if she leaves this estate alive, the entire corporate structure collapses under the federal investigation. Do it cleanly, doctor. Make it look like a natural failure.”
Julian stood frozen, the blood roaring in his ears as the final piece of the nightmare locked into place. His mother hadn't just covered up a corporate crime; she had murdered his wife in cold blood to protect her control over the dynasty.
A sudden, sharp beep echoed from the server console.

Julian looked down at the screen. A new dialog box popped up instantly, overriding his files with a bright red warning banner: Security Alert: Remote system shutdown initiated by Master Terminal. All drives will be purged in 60 seconds.
