Chapter 15 - Dawn of the Legacy

The high-definition video feed glowed with a cold blue light against the dark server racks, casting an eerie pallor over Julian’s face as he stared at the small screen.

Upstairs in the nursery, little Lily shifted restlessly in her sleep, while Katherine stood motionless beside the white crib, holding the heavy glass decanter in one gloved hand and a small silver spoon in the other, hovering just inches above the bedside water glass.

“You wouldn't,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mix of fury and helplessness as he looked back at Evelyn. “She’s your own granddaughter.”

“Lily is a Vance,” Evelyn replied, her voice steady and chillingly calm as she adjusted her diamond pearls. “She carries our blood, our name, and our future. But if you walk out of this room with that storage blade, and if you hand those files to Detective Miller, you force my hand. I will not let a single reckless son destroy four generations of survival over sentimentality.”

Arthur finally looked up from the floor behind her, his face pale and hollow. “Just give it to her, Julian. You can’t beat her. Nobody beats her. She owns the police, she owns the board, and she owns the house.”

Julian looked down at the solid-state storage blade clutched in his bleeding hand. All the proof he needed to jail his mother and expose the murder of his wife was right there in his palm. But every second he hesitated brought Katherine’s silver spoon closer to his daughter’s water glass.

He slowly opened his fingers.

The heavy metal storage blade slipped from his grasp, clattering loudly against the raised steel tiles of the server room floor, coming to rest near Evelyn’s polished leather shoes.

Evelyn looked down at the drive, a faint, victorious smile touching the corners of her mouth. She nudged it slightly with the toe of her shoe before looking back up at her son.

“Wisdom, at last, Julian,” she murmured softly. “You’re finally learning how this family survives.”

Julian didn't answer. He turned on his heel and bolted out of the server room, sprinting through the dark utility corridor and taking the stairs three at a time. He burst through the West Wing hallway doors, his heavy footsteps echoing frantically against the wood-paneled walls as he raced toward the nursery.

He threw open the pink bedroom door, slamming it against the wall with a loud bang.

Lily stirred in her bed, blinking sleepily against the sudden light, rubbing her eyes with the sleeve of her white cardigan. The bedside water glass was untouched, perfectly still. Katherine was nowhere to be seen, the room completely empty save for the quiet hum of the night-light.

Julian rushed to the crib, scooping Lily up into his arms and pulling her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her soft blonde curls as tears finally spilled over his lashes.

“Daddy?” Lily whispered sleepily, wrapping her small arms around his neck. “Is the bad game over?”

“It’s over, sweetheart,” Julian whispered back, staring out the window as the first pale rays of dawn broke over the rain-slicked estate, illuminating a new day where he was the sole master of whatever ashes remained.
