Chapter 12 - The Locked Wing

The heavy oak door of the West Wing guest suite slammed shut with a definitive, jarring thud, followed immediately by the sharp, metallic click of a deadbolt sliding home from the outside.
Julian didn't rush the door. He stood in the center of the spacious, dimly lit room, his chest rising and falling in slow, measured breaths. The air smelled faintly of old lavender and polished mahogany, completely isolated from the rest of the sprawling mansion. He walked slowly to the tall arched window, pulling back the heavy velvet curtains to look out into the stormy night. Down below, the rain fell in sheets, washing across the gravel driveway where the empty police cruisers had departed an hour earlier, leaving him completely cut off from the outside world.
He knew Evelyn’s game. She wanted to isolate him, break his resolve, and force him to sign the board proxy agreements before sunrise.
A soft tapping sound came from the connecting wall shared with the adjoining study.
Julian spun around, pressing his ear against the floral wallpaper. The tapping repeated—three short raps, a pause, and two quick strikes. It was the old childhood code he and Arthur used to use when they hid from their tutors in the east wing attic.
“Julian?” Arthur’s muffled voice whispered through the lath and plaster wall. “Can you hear me?”
Julian pressed his mouth close to the baseboard. “I can hear you, Arthur. If you’re here to deliver another one of Mother’s ultimatums, save your breath.”
“I’m not,” Arthur whispered back, the sound frantic and strained. “Look behind the full-length mirror near the bathroom door. There’s a service panel. Mother doesn't know I had the maintenance crew unlock it last year when I needed a private exit from this wing.”
Julian turned around, scanning the dimly lit suite until his eyes landed on the heavy, ornate mirror mounted against the partition wall. He stepped up to it, gripped the gilded frame, and pulled firmly to the left. The entire mirror swung outward on hidden hinges, revealing a narrow, dark utility corridor stretching into the belly of the mansion’s older foundations.
“Why are you helping me, Arthur?” Julian asked into the dark gap, keeping one hand on the edge of the frame. “Ten minutes ago you were ready to watch me go down for corporate sabotage and attempted poisoning.”
“Because Mother just had my corporate accounts frozen, and she cut my allowance to zero,” Arthur hissed, his voice bitter with sudden, desperate hatred. “She doesn't share power, Julian. She never did. She used me to get to you, and now that I’m useless to her, I’m next on the chopping block.”
Julian stepped into the narrow utility corridor, holding his phone out to illuminate the damp brick walls. “Where does this tunnel lead?”

“Straight to the server room beneath the executive offices,” Arthur whispered. “Where the backup hard drives are stored. The ones containing the unedited financial audits and Sarah’s original medical files.”
