Chapter 10 - The Midnight Confession

A heavy hand landed firmly on Julian’s shoulder, smelling faintly of stale scotch and old parchment.
Julian didn't need to turn around to know it was Arthur, but he pivoted anyway, driving his elbow backward with practiced precision. Arthur caught Julian’s forearm just in time, staggering back against the wallpapered wall with a breathless wheeze.
“Stop it! Both of you, stop acting like animals!” Katherine hissed, snatching her whiskey glass back from the console table and glaring at the two brothers. “We don’t have time for your childish testosterone displays. If Evelyn catches us talking out here, she’ll have our security clearance revoked before the clock strikes two.”
Julian lowered his arm, his eyes locked onto Arthur’s bruised face. “Talk. Now. What is Evelyn hiding in the private archive that made her lock me in the basement tonight?”
Arthur wiped a smear of blood from his lip, laughing bitterly as he slid down the wall until he sat cross-legged on the Persian rug. “She’s hiding your wife’s real medical file, Julian. The one from the night Sarah died.”
The air in the hallway seemed to vanish completely. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a caged animal.
“Sarah died of heart failure during childbirth,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper. “The hospital records were filed, certified, and sealed by the state.”
“The state records were forged by mother’s legal team three hours before you even woke up from surgery,” Katherine said quietly, stepping closer and placing a hand on Julian’s torn sleeve. Her usual mocking tone was entirely gone, replaced by a raw, genuine panic. “Sarah didn't die of natural heart failure, Julian. She was given a slow-acting cardiac inhibitor over a period of three months. The exact same compound Arthur tried to slip into your wine decanter tonight.”
Julian stared at her, his mind struggling to process the impossible architecture of the lie he had lived inside for four years. “Why? Sarah had no corporate power, no voting shares, no influence over the board.”
“She found the offshore accounts linking Evelyn to the illegal toxic waste dumping in the northern valley,” Arthur muttered from the floor, staring blankly at his own hands. “And she threatened to take you and Lily and leave the family forever. Mother couldn't let you walk away with the heir.”
Julian slowly turned away from them, his vision blurring slightly as the weight of the revelation crushed down upon his chest. He walked toward the end of the hallway, pushing open the heavy double doors leading to Evelyn’s private study, stepping inside just as the grandfather clock downstairs began its slow, rhythmic chime for midnight.

As the first heavy bell tolled, the study’s desk lamp flickered on automatically, illuminating Grandmother Evelyn sitting behind the mahogany desk, holding Sarah’s missing wedding ring between her thumb and forefinger.
