Chapter 14 - The Final Countdown

The screen flashed red as the countdown timer ticked down from sixty seconds, the numbers blinking aggressively against the dark background.
58… 57… 56…
Julian’s fingers moved across the keyboard in a frantic blur, attempting to cancel the automated purge protocol, but every command he entered was instantly blocked by Evelyn’s master override code. The internal storage drives in the server racks began to click and whir loudly as the data deletion sequence initiated across the network.
“Damn it!” Julian slammed his palm against the steel desk, watching helplessly as the files containing Sarah’s encrypted medical records and the audio confession vanished one by one from the directory tree.
He had twenty seconds left before the physical hard drives in front of him were magnetically wiped clean.
Without hesitation, Julian grabbed a heavy metal wrench from the nearby maintenance kit, stepped up to the primary server rack housing the main data archive, and smashed the reinforced glass casing of the master storage unit. Sparks showered across the raised floor tiles as he reached inside, unlatching the primary solid-state storage blade with a sharp wrench twist, and ripped it free from its housing just as the countdown hit zero.
The entire server room went instantly dark, the hum of the cooling fans dying away into an eerie, suffocating silence, leaving only the dim red emergency lights casting long shadows across the empty room.
Julian stood breathing heavily in the dark, clutching the warm metal storage blade in his hand, knowing he had the physical evidence that would bring down the entire Vance empire.
As he turned toward the exit door leading back to the utility tunnel, the heavy steel door clicked and slowly swung open.
Grandmother Evelyn stood in the doorway, framed by the harsh fluorescent light of the hallway behind her. She wasn't holding a weapon, and her posture was as elegant and composed as ever, her pearls glowing softly against her beige patterned dress. Arthur stood a few steps behind her, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, avoiding Julian’s eyes completely.
“You were always too impulsive, Julian,” Evelyn said calmly, stepping into the dark server room with measured, unhurried steps. “Just like your father. Thinking that breaking a machine can stop what’s already been built.”
Julian gripped the storage blade tighter in his hand, stepping forward to block her path. “The physical drive is in my hand, Mother. The audio confession is intact. Your empire is over.”
Evelyn smiled, a cold, chilling expression that lacked any warmth. “Is it? Look behind you, Julian.”

Julian turned slowly toward the security monitor. The screen flickered back on, displaying a live high-definition video feed of the West Wing nursery upstairs, where little Lily was still sleeping soundly beneath her white quilted blankets—with Katherine standing over her bed holding a glass identical to the one from the dinner table.
