Chapter 9 - The Cliffs of Deception

The salt spray whipped against Julian’s face as he killed the engine of his SUV at the edge of the jagged limestone cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. Below, the dark, churning waves crashed violently against the rocks. Moored in a secluded private cove sat the sleek, twin-engine yacht of the Vanderbilt estate, its running lights glowing an eerie, pulsing green against the black water.
Julian drew his pistol, checking the chamber with a practiced click. He didn't hesitate. He scrambled down the steep, treacherous footpath carved into the cliffside, his boots slipping on loose gravel and wet moss. Every muscle in his body burned with exhaustion, but adrenaline kept him moving forward.
At the base of the cliff, the heavy wooden dock creaked rhythmically under the rising tide. Thomas Vance stood on the rear deck of the yacht, a waterproof leather satchel clutched tightly in his left hand—the very satchel containing the missing estate ledgers and Arthur’s true will. He was untying the stern lines when he heard the crunch of gravel behind him.
"End of the line, Vance," Julian’s voice cut through the sound of the crashing surf, cold and resolute as he raised his weapon, leveling it directly at the deck. "Drop the bag and turn around slowly."
Vance paused, his hands resting on the nylon rope. Slowly, he turned his head, a thin, sardonic smile playing across his lips. He didn't drop the bag. Instead, he reached into his trench coat and pulled out a heavy steel detonator box with a single red toggle switch.
"You really think a bullet stops what’s already in motion, Mr. Vanderbilt?" Vance called out, his voice carrying easily over the wind. "I wired the main fuel lines of this yacht, and the explosives are tied directly to a dead-man’s switch in my hand. If I let go, or if your bullet hits me, this entire cove goes up in flames—along with every piece of evidence linking your family to fifty years of corporate fraud and embezzlement."
Julian kept his weapon steady, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "You're bluffing. You love money too much to die for my mother’s sins."
"Money is just a tool, Julian. I’ve been skimming off this estate since before you graduated law school," Vance laughed darkly. "Your father knew it, too. That’s why he tried to change the will. He wasn't trying to punish you; he was trying to save you from becoming the monster your mother shaped."
Before Julian could process the confession, the beam of a high-powered searchlight swept down from the clifftop road above, illuminating the dock in a blinding white glare. A megaphone crackled to life, echoing across the water. “Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and step away from the vessel!”

Vance’s smile vanished. Panic flashed in his eyes for a split second before he slammed his thumb down hard onto the detonator switch. A dull, subterranean thud echoed from beneath the hull of the yacht, and a thick plume of black smoke began to pour from the engine compartment.
