Chapter 8 - Echoes in the Vault

The deafening crack of the rifle shot reverberated down the hospital corridor, shattering the glass panel of the door into a thousand glittering fragments. Helena stumbled backward, her footing lost on the wet linoleum as the wild oxygen tank pinned her against the opposite wall.
"Now, Clara! Run!" Evelyn yelled, grabbing the rolling IV stand and using it to push the hospital bed toward the secondary exit leading to the service elevator.
Clara bit her lip, suppressing a cry of pain as she dragged herself out of the bed, her bare feet touching the cold, wet floor. Together, they scrambled out of the room just as the heavy security doors at the end of the hall began to unlock, signaling the arrival of armed hospital guards responding to the gunfire.
Meanwhile, miles away on the sprawling Vanderbilt estate, Julian’s black SUV tore through the iron gates, kicking up gravel as it slid to a halt outside the old carriage house. The subterranean vault doors were standing wide open, cast iron hinges groaning in the night wind. A faint orange glow flickered from deep within the stone steps, accompanied by the distinct smell of burning paper and accelerated fuel.
Julian leaped from the vehicle, slamming the door shut. He drew his service pistol—a relic from his brief stint as a federal prosecutor—and flicked on the tactical flashlight mounted beneath the barrel. The beam cut through the thick plumes of grey smoke billowing up from the underground archives.
"Vance! I know you're down there!" Julian shouted into the dark abyss, his voice echoing off the ancient stone walls. "Drop the accelerant and step out with your hands where I can see them!"
There was no answer, save for the crackle of burning parchment and the steady drip of water from the ancient drainage pipes above. Julian descended the stone steps cautiously, his boots crunching on charred financial ledgers and melted plastic binders. The air was suffocatingly hot, thick with the destruction of a half-century of Vanderbilt history.
As he reached the central vault chamber, the beam of his flashlight caught a figure standing silhouette against the raging fire. It wasn't Vance. It was an elderly estate archivist, Mr. Higgins, coughing violently as he tried to stamp out the flames with a heavy woolen blanket.
"Mr. Vanderbilt! Thank God!" Higgins wheezed, falling to his knees as Julian rushed forward to drag him away from the wall of fire. "It was Vance... he forced me at gunpoint to ignite the historical ledgers. He said everything had to burn before the audit tomorrow."
Julian grabbed Higgins by the shoulders, pulling him clear of the smoke. "Where did Vance go? There has to be another exit from this vault."
"The old smuggling tunnel," Higgins gasped, pointing a trembling finger toward the back corner of the vault, half-hidden behind a collapsed mahogany bookshelf. "It leads out to the cliffs by the ocean. He’s heading for the private yacht."
Julian released the archivist and sprinted toward the hidden passage. But as he reached the mouth of the tunnel, his encrypted satellite phone buzzed furiously in his pocket. He pulled it out, seeing Evelyn’s number flashing on the screen. He answered instantly, panting for breath. "Evelyn, report. Is Clara safe?"

"Julian, thank God you answered," Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker, frantic and punctuated by sirens wailing in the background. "Your mother brought a rifle to the hospital. We got away, but she knows about the real will. And Julian... Vance has the original ledger. He's heading for the estate's private coastline right now."
