Chapter 13 - The Final Vault

"Clara, look out!" Julian screamed, diving out of the elevator before the doors had even fully parted.

He raised his weapon, but he couldn't fire without risking hitting Clara. With a desperate burst of speed, Julian hurled himself across the stone floor, tackling the figure just as the heavy steel pipe swung downward. The metal clanged loudly against the stone, sending sparks flying across the damp floor.

The assailant stumbled back into the light, revealing the gaunt, desperate face of Mr. Higgins, the estate archivist. His formerly neat clothes were torn and covered in soot, his eyes wide and unhinged with adrenaline.

"You shouldn't have come back down here, Mr. Vanderbilt," Higgins rasped, clutching a heavy brass padlock in his fist like a weapon. "The girl belongs to the past. If this vault opens, fifty years of stability crumbles into dust."

"You weren't just an archivist, Higgins," Julian panted, keeping his pistol trained on the old man while using his left hand to pull Clara safely behind him. "You were the one who helped my mother rewrite the trust documents after my father died."

"I was the only one loyal enough to keep this family from tearing itself apart!" Higgins shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Arthur was weak. He wanted to give everything away to a stranger because of a guilty conscience. But Mrs. Vanderbilt and I built this fortune brick by brick."

Clara clutched Julian’s arm, her breathing shallow as she looked past Higgins toward the open vault door. Inside, resting on a velvet pedestal, sat a small, locked mahogany box bearing the Vanderbilt family crest—the very box containing the original birth certificates and adoption papers that would prove her true identity and destroy Helena’s empire once and for all.

"The box is mine, Higgins," Clara said, her voice steady and ringing with a quiet, undeniable authority that commanded the room. "My grandfather built this estate with honest hands before your masters turned it into a tomb of lies. You can't burn the truth away."

Higgins lunged forward with a desperate cry, swinging the heavy brass padlock toward Julian’s head. Julian ducked, driving his fist hard into Higgins’s ribs. The old man gasped, losing his balance on the slick stone floor, and crashed heavily against the iron shelves lining the corridor. Hundreds of leather-bound ledgers cascaded down around him like a tidal wave of paper, burying him beneath the weight of his own secrets.

Silence descended upon the vault, broken only by the heavy, echoing sound of their breathing. Julian lowered his weapon, turning to Clara and pulling her into a tight, protective embrace.

"Are you alright?" he asked softly, resting his forehead against hers. "Why did you come down here alone?"

May you like

"Because I needed to prove who I am, Julian—not just to your mother, but to you," Clara whispered, handing him the iron key. "Open the box."
