Chapter 1 - The Shattered Cup

The crystal chandelier above the grand hallway cast a harsh, glittering light across the polished marble floor. Helena Vanderbilt held the small porcelain cup with a white-knuckled grip, her dark bun unnaturally tight against her scalp. Her black dress absorbed the light, casting a grim shadow over Clara, who sat trapped in the mahogany wheelchair. Clara’s long dark hair fell across her shoulders, framing a face pale with terror. Her light beige patterned dress rustled as she tried to pull back, pressing her hands against the armrests.
"Drink it, Clara," Helena commanded, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "You will not bring a bastard child into this family to ruin everything Arthur built."
"No, please," Clara gasped, her voice trembling as she shook her head violently. "The baby... you're hurting the baby!"
"You signed the waiver when you married my son, girl," Helena snapped, forcing the rim of the cup against Clara’s lips. A dark, bitter liquid sloshed over the edge, staining the fabric of Clara's dress. "Swallow it now!"
Before Clara could choke down the noxious draught, Nurse Evelyn burst from the side gallery. With a sharp cry of alarm, Evelyn lunged forward, her fingers biting hard into Helena’s wrist. The porcelain cup flew from Helena’s hand, shattering against the marble with a sharp crack.
"What are you doing? Let go of me, you insolent fool!" Helena shrieked, stumbling back.
Clara clutched her lower abdomen, her breath hitching in her throat. Her eyes rolled backward as the heavy sedative coursed through her system. Her head slumped heavily against the wheelchair cushion. The legal briefs and medical files she had been holding slipped from her limp fingers, scattering crisp white papers across the reflective floor.
With a sickening lurch, the wheelchair spun around, careening backward down the slight incline of the grand hall. Evelyn screamed a warning, but it was too late. The chair crashed heavily into a massive marble pillar near the wrought-iron double doors, throwing Clara’s motionless body sideways. A pool of the dark, spilled liquid darkened the marble right beside her hand.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors groaned as they swung slowly inward. Julian Vanderbilt stepped across the threshold, his light grey double-suited shoulders rigid, his crisp white shirt collar stark against his dark tie. He clutched his leather briefcase in one hand, freezing in mid-stride as his eyes took in the horrific scene before him.
Helena whipped around, her face instantly draining of color, her wide-eyed, terrified gaze locking onto her son.

"Julian," Helena whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at the briefcase in his hand. "You're... you're supposed to be in New York."
