Chapter 11 - The Stolen Cradle

Julian’s hands trembled slightly as he broke the wax seal on the aging manila envelope. The paper inside was yellowed and brittle at the edges—an adoption file dated nearly twenty-four years ago, bearing the official stamp of a private maternity clinic in Boston that had mysteriously closed its doors the same year.
"What is this, Agent Miller?" Julian asked, his voice barely audible over the crackle of the sinking yacht behind them.
"Read the birth mother’s name," Miller instructed, shining his flashlight directly onto the faded ink of the document.
Julian squinted, his eyes tracking across the lines of typewritten text until they locked onto a name that made his breath catch in his throat. The birth mother was listed as Elena Vance—Thomas Vance’s younger sister, who had worked as a nursemaid at the Vanderbilt estate before mysteriously vanishing shortly after giving birth.
"Clara isn't just some girl I met at a roadside cafe," Julian whispered, the horrifying realization washing over him like freezing water. "She’s Thomas Vance’s niece. My mother knew all along."
"Worse than that," Miller added grimly. "Arthur Vanderbilt didn't write that second will to punish you for marrying beneath your social standing. He wrote it because he discovered Helena had conspired with Vance to steal his estate fifty years ago—and when Arthur found out about Clara, he tried to make her his legal ward to restore the inheritance to its rightful bloodline."
Julian stared down at the satchel containing the documents. Everything he thought he knew about his family, his marriage, and his entire existence was built on a foundation of calculated deception. Helena hadn't just been protecting a legacy; she had been guarding a multi-layered conspiracy built on blackmail and stolen identity.
He turned toward his SUV, where Evelyn was waiting by the passenger door, holding her phone with a look of sheer panic on her face. Julian broke into a run, slamming the door open as he reached the vehicle.
"Evelyn, what is it?" Julian demanded, tossing the satchel onto the back seat.
"It’s Clara," Evelyn said, her voice shaking violently as she showed him a text message from an unknown number. "She discharged herself from the hospital ten minutes ago. She left a note saying she had to go back to the mansion to confront Helena face-to-face before the police sealed the property."
Julian cursed loudly, throwing the SUV into drive and spinning the steering wheel hard as tires screeched against the gravel. "She’s walking right into a trap. Even with Helena detained, there are loyalists still inside that house who would do anything to keep those secrets buried."
