Chapter 3 - The Sterile Corridor

The fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital buzzed with an irritating, relentless frequency. Julian paced the length of the sterile waiting room, the heels of his shoes clicking a frantic rhythm against the linoleum. His light grey suit was slightly wrinkled at the elbows from carrying Clara, the dark tie loosened around his collar. Every ticking second stretched like elastic, pulling his frayed nerves to the absolute breaking point.

Nurse Evelyn sat nearby, clutching a cup of lukewarm black coffee she had barely touched. Her eyes were red-rimmed, darting nervously toward the swinging double doors that led to the intensive care unit. She could still feel the phantom grip of Helena Vanderbilt’s wrist, and the text message on her phone felt like a ticking bomb burning a hole in her pocket.

"Mr. Vanderbilt, you should sit down," Evelyn offered softly, breaking the tense silence. "The doctors are doing everything they can. Clara is strong, and the baby... well, young bodies have a remarkable resilience."

"Resilience?" Julian stopped pacing, turning to face her with a gaze that burned with suppressed fury. "My mother tried to poison my wife in our own home, Evelyn. Not a month ago, she swore to me that she had accepted Clara into the family. It was all a calculated performance to lower our guard."

"People driven by greed and legacy lose their minds when they realize they're losing control," Evelyn replied, staring into her coffee cup. "Mrs. Vanderbilt views that estate as her personal kingdom. Anyone who threatens the bloodline becomes an enemy to be eliminated."

The heavy doors to the ICU swung open, and Dr. Marcus Hayes stepped out, stripping off his surgical gloves. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deep and etched with concern. Julian rushed forward, grabbing the doctor's forearm before he could speak a word.

"Dr. Hayes, tell me. Are they alive?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking slightly.

"Clara is stable, Mr. Vanderbilt, though she's still unconscious from the heavy sedative," Dr. Hayes said carefully, choosing his words with professional gravity. "As for the pregnancy... it was a very close margin. We managed to stabilize her vitals, but she is experiencing severe contractions. We are doing everything possible to prevent premature labor."

Julian let out a ragged breath, leaning back against the wall as the sheer weight of the relief washed over him. "Can I see her?"

"Not yet. She needs absolute rest," Dr. Hayes answered. He hesitated, lowering his voice. "However, Mr. Vanderbilt, there is something else you need to see. During the emergency workup, we ran a comprehensive toxicology panel. What was in that cup wasn't just a standard sedative. It was a rare, synthetic abortifacient."

Julian’s blood turned to ice. Before he could process the full implication, Evelyn’s phone chimed loudly in the quiet hallway, displaying a live security camera feed from the Vanderbilt mansion.
