Chapter 12 - Descent Into the Crypt

The grand iron gates of the Vanderbilt estate swung open automatically as Julian’s SUV barreled up the long, tree-lined driveway. The mansion loomed against the stormy night sky like a monolith of dark stone, its windows dark except for a single amber glow flickering from the library windows on the second floor.
Julian slammed on the brakes, cutting the engine before the vehicle had even fully stopped. He grabbed the satchel from the back seat, unholstering his service pistol once more. Evelyn scrambled out behind him, holding a high-powered tactical flashlight.
"Stay close to me," Julian ordered, his voice brooking no argument as they ascended the grand marble steps.
The heavy front doors were unlocked, swinging open with a soft, ominous creak. The hallway where Clara had been attacked just hours earlier was now empty, the broken glass and spilled liquid cleaned up by police technicians who had apparently already come and gone. But the air still felt heavy, saturated with the palpable tension of a house holding its breath.
"Julian, look at the portrait," Evelyn whispered, shining her flashlight toward the massive oil painting of Arthur Vanderbilt hanging above the main staircase.
The heavy painting had been pulled slightly askew, revealing a narrow, hidden panel in the wood-paneled wall behind it—a private elevator shaft that Arthur had installed decades ago to move unseen between his private study and the underground archives. The steel door of the elevator was cracked open an inch, its control panel glowing with an unauthorized override light.
"She didn't go to the library," Julian said, his jaw tightening. "She went straight down to the primary vault. That’s where Arthur kept his personal journals."
Without another word, Julian pulled open the heavy steel door of the private elevator. The interior was cramped, smelling faintly of old paper and dust. They stepped inside, and Julian punched the bottom-most button marked with a simple Roman numeral: X.
The car shuddered violently before beginning its slow, agonizing descent into the bowels of the estate. The descent felt like dropping into a tomb. With every foot they sank beneath the earth, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the air grew thick and stale.
When the elevator finally ground to a halt with a metallic thud, the doors slid open to reveal a dimly lit subterranean corridor lined with iron-reinforced doors. At the far end of the hallway, standing before the massive vault door that had supposedly been burned earlier, was Clara.

She stood motionless, her light beige patterned dress stained with dried mud, holding a heavy iron key in her right hand. But she wasn't alone. Standing just behind her in the shadows was a figure holding a heavy steel pipe, lowering it slowly toward her unprotected shoulders.
