Chapter 5 - The Override Code

Evelyn stared at the blinking red light on the ICU keypad. The secure hospital network had been compromised, and the manual override meant someone had just unlocked Clara’s door from a remote terminal. She reached out, her fingers hovering over the plastic casing, hesitating for a fraction of a second before pulling her hand back as the heavy door clicked open with a soft pneumatic hiss.
The room was bathed in the pale, sickly glow of the bedside heart monitor. The rhythmic beep-beep filled the quiet space, measuring out Clara’s fragile existence. Clara still lay motionless beneath the white cotton blanket, her dark hair spread across the pillow like spilled ink. But she wasn't alone.
Standing beside the bed was a figure draped in a dark trench coat, a wide-brimmed hat casting deep shadows over their face. In their gloved hand, they held a syringe filled with a clear, bubbling liquid, poised directly above the intravenous line connected to Clara’s arm.
"Stop right there!" Evelyn screamed, lunging forward without a second thought. She grabbed a heavy steel IV pole from the corner and swung it like a bat, aiming directly for the intruder's arm.
The figure spun around with surprising agility, ducking the blow. The syringe slipped from their grip, shattering against the linoleum floor, spraying the mysterious chemical across the tiles in a tiny, hissing puddle. The intruder raised their head, revealing the sharp, unblinking eyes of Thomas Vance, the estate's chief of security.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Nurse," Vance said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped away from the bed. "The Vanderbilt legacy cannot survive the truth this girl carries. Mr. Vanderbilt thinks he can save everyone, but he’s blind to the rot at the core of this family."
"You traitor!" Evelyn shouted, pressing her back against the door to block his exit while frantically reaching for her panic button. "You're supposed to protect this family, not execute patients in a hospital!"
Vance didn't flinch. Instead, a grim, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth. "Protect the family? My loyalty isn't to Julian or his mother. It’s to the man who built this empire—and Arthur Vanderbilt left explicit instructions that no outside bloodline would ever inherit a single dime of his fortune."
Before Evelyn could press the alarm button, Vance moved with brutal, practiced speed. He drew a small, heavy object from his pocket and slammed it against the wall-mounted fire sprinkler control panel. A sharp alarm wailed to life overhead, and instantly, a blinding cascade of cold water flooded the room, drenching them both.

In the blinding chaos of the indoor sprinkler system, Vance slipped past Evelyn, shoving her hard against the doorframe. As she gasped for air, she watched him vanish down the flooded corridor. Desperate, she rushed to Clara's bedside, only to see the heart monitor suddenly flatline, emitting a long, continuous, terrifying tone.
