Chapter 9

The heavy glass doors of the federal building closed behind them with a muffled pneumatic hiss, sealing Julian inside the custody of the investigators. The night air hit Valeria with a sharp, cleansing chill. She stood on the wide concrete steps, watching the distant red and white streaks of traffic bleeding across the downtown avenue. For the first time in ten years, the suffocating weight that had constantly pressed down on her chest was completely gone.

Julian’s father stepped up beside her, leaning lightly on his silver-handled cane. "I’m sorry you had to be dragged through the mud to uncover the truth, Valeria. My son is a deeply flawed man, and I take full responsibility for failing to correct his course years ago."

Valeria turned to look at the older man, her expression guarded but calm. "You didn't create his choices, Mr. Vance. He made every single one of them on his own. But I want to know why you were tracking him so closely in the first place. You didn't just happen to be having dinner at that upscale restaurant tonight."

The older woman—Julian’s mother—walked up quietly from behind them, wrapping a cashmere scarf tighter around her neck. "We weren't just tracking him, dear. We received an anonymous tip three days ago warning us that Julian was planning to liquidate the remaining family trust assets through a fictitious divorce settlement."

Valeria’s eyebrows drew together in confusion. "An anonymous tip? From whom?"

Before the older woman could answer, a sleek black sedan pulled up smoothly to the curb, and the rear door swung open. A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out from the vehicle, holding a heavy leather briefcase. As he moved under the amber glow of the streetlamp, Valeria caught her breath. It was Marcus, Julian’s former business partner who had mysteriously vanished from the firm two years ago right after a major internal audit.

"From me, Valeria," Marcus said calmly, walking up the steps toward them. He placed the heavy briefcase down on the concrete bench and popped the brass latches, revealing rows of neatly organized financial records and signed corporate affidavits. "Julian thought he bought my silence when he pushed me out of the company. But he didn't realize I kept duplicate backups of every single fraudulent transaction he pushed through our accounts."

Valeria stared at the open briefcase, realizing that the house of cards Julian had built had been destined to collapse from the very beginning. "You've been building this case against him for years," she said softly.

Marcus nodded slowly. "Ever since he tried to frame me for his first major embezzlement scheme. Tonight was never about a random dinner. It was the final trap to ensure he had nowhere left to run."
