Chapter 12

The digital audio interface on Marcus’s laptop glowed with a series of rising and falling green waveform lines. The heavy mahogany study was completely silent except for the faint, steady crackle of the fireplace logs. Valeria stood directly behind Marcus’s chair, her fingers resting lightly on the polished backrest, staring at the screen with a mixture of dread and morbid fascination.
"Play the first file, Marcus," Valeria said, her voice remarkably steady, though her heart was hammering frantically against her ribs.
Marcus clicked his mouse, and a digitized voice filled the room. It was Julian’s voice, cold and calculating, recorded over the phone two years ago.
“She’s too ambitious for her own good,” the recorded Julian spoke to an unknown associate. “If Valeria gets partner at her firm, she’ll start looking too closely at our household tax returns. I’ve already rerouted her primary client proposals to a dummy email address so the senior partners think she’s incompetent. It’s only a matter of time before she quits on her own.”
Valeria gripped the back of the chair tighter, her knuckles turning stark white. The memory of that exact period rushed back to her—the sudden, inexplicable rejection of her major client accounts, the creeping self-doubt, the late nights spent crying alone in her office wondering where she had failed. It wasn't bad luck or professional stagnation. It was a systematic, calculated sabotage executed by her own husband to keep her dependent and blind to his crimes.
Arthur Vance clenched his jaw so tightly that the muscles in his cheeks twitched. "The manipulative coward," he muttered, slamming his fist gently against the arm of his chair. "He couldn't stand the thought of you succeeding on your own merits, Valeria, because it exposed how utterly hollow his own achievements were."
"There are dozens of these files," Marcus said, scrolling down through a seemingly endless list of encrypted audio clips and document logs. "He maintained a complete psychological profile on you, Valeria, tracking your daily routines, your friendships, and your professional contacts, all designed to ensure you never gained enough independence to walk away from him."
Valeria looked down at the glowing screen, a profound sense of clarity washing over her anger. The confusion, the gaslighting, the endless cycles of self-doubt—it all finally made sickening, undeniable sense. She wasn't crazy. She had simply been trapped in a cage built by a master manipulator.
"He thought he could control me forever," Valeria whispered, a cold, sharp resolve settling deep into her bones. She reached out and touched the edge of Marcus’s desk. "Give me a copy of that entire dossier, Marcus."

Marcus looked up, surprised. "Valeria, what are you planning to do with it?"
"I’m going to make sure that when Julian stands before the federal judge next week, he doesn't just answer for embezzlement," Valeria replied, her eyes flashing with cold determination. "He’s going to answer for every single lie he ever told."
