Chapter 10

The interior of Marcus’s private study was lined from floor to ceiling with dark mahogany bookshelves and heavy leather-bound volumes that smelled of old paper and pipe tobacco. Valeria sat in a high-backed wing chair near the fireplace, warming her hands around a porcelain cup of black coffee. The chaotic events of the past twenty-four hours felt like a distant, feverish dream, yet the documents spread out across the antique coffee table were entirely real.

Marcus stood by the window, looking out over the quiet, tree-lined suburban street. "Julian was always obsessed with keeping up appearances," he said, turning back to face Valeria and the elder Vances. "When his startup failed five years ago, he didn't just lose his own capital; he quietly began tapping into the restricted research and development funds of Vance Industries, routing the money through shell accounts that he managed under various pseudonyms."

The older man—Arthur Vance—walked slowly across the room, resting his hand on the back of Valeria’s chair. "And when the federal regulators started sniffing around our corporate headquarters last month, Julian panicked," Arthur continued, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "He realized he needed a massive, untraceable liquidity event to cover the missing millions before the annual audit closed. That’s when he manufactured the tension in your marriage, pushed you toward a quick, quiet divorce, and engineered the fraudulent asset transfer using your name."

Valeria looked down at the coffee cup, watching the dark liquid swirl as her thoughts raced. "And the divorce settlement papers I signed three days ago... legally, what happens to my name now?"

Marcus walked over to the coffee table and tapped a thick folder stamped with federal review seals. "Because Agent Miller and the financial crimes division have Chloe’s sworn testimony and the digital keystroke logs from the external hard drive, your name will be completely cleared of any criminal conspiracy charges by tomorrow morning. Legally, the courts will dissolve the fraudulent settlement and return the remaining assets directly to Vance Industries."

Valeria let out a long, shaky breath, feeling a tremendous weight lift from her shoulders. "So I’m completely free. No debt, no federal liabilities, and no connection to Julian's criminal empire."

"Completely free," Arthur confirmed, offering her a reassuring, paternal smile. "Though I must admit, Valeria, your poise under pressure tonight was extraordinary. Most people would have completely fallen apart facing what you faced in that restaurant."

Before Valeria could respond, Marcus’s secure desk phone let out a sharp, electronic ring, breaking the quiet atmosphere of the study.
