Chapter 5

The elevator ride to the fifteenth floor was entirely silent, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the high-speed cable system. Valeria stood near the control panel, watching the digital numbers flash past in glowing red LEDs. Each floor felt like another layer of an inescapable trap. When the doors slid open, they revealed a sterile, brightly lit conference room dominated by a long mahogany table and two men in sharply tailored dark suits holding leather briefcases.

Julian tried to step forward first, but his father placed a firm, heavy hand on his shoulder, stopping him in his tracks. "Let’s get one thing straight before we walk through those glass doors," the older man whispered fiercely. "You will answer every question truthfully, or I will personally hand the secondary wire transfers directly to the grand jury."

A woman with sharply trimmed blonde hair and rimless glasses stood up from the far end of the conference table, closing a red file folder with a crisp snap. "Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance—or I should say, former Mrs. Vance. Thank you for arriving on such short notice. I am Special Agent Miller with the federal financial crimes division."

Valeria’s knees weakened slightly, but she forced herself to stand tall, gripping the strap of her beige handbag. "I was told this was a private family matter," she said, her voice steady despite the absolute terror gripping her chest. "I am only here because I was informed my divorce settlement might be compromised."

Agent Miller gestured toward two empty chairs opposite the federal investigators. "Please, sit down. Unfortunately, Mrs. Vance, your divorce settlement isn't just compromised; it was engineered specifically to act as a financial firewall for funds illegally diverted from Vance Industries. Your signature appears on three separate offshore account applications dated forty-eight hours before your court filing."

Julian quickly dropped into the chair beside Valeria, his face pale and sweating under the harsh recessed lighting. "She didn't know anything about those accounts! I forged her signature on the digital authorization forms using her old notary stamp from her paralegal days."

The room went deathly still. Valeria slowly turned her head to look at Julian, the horrifying magnitude of his betrayal crashing over her like a tidal wave. He hadn't just used her as a shield; he had left her legally vulnerable to federal felony charges.

Agent Miller pressed a button on the conference table console, and a large wall-mounted monitor flickered to life, displaying a high-resolution scan of a bank signature card bearing Valeria's exact handwriting—complete with a microscopic flaw in the capital 'V' that only a forensic document examiner could spot.
