Chapter 13

The morning sun cast long, golden rays across the polished oak floors of Valeria’s newly organized home office. The old computer terminal that Julian had secretly accessed was now sitting disassembled on a service mat in the center of the room, undergoing a complete cryptographic wipe by a certified digital forensics technician.

Valeria stood by the window, wearing a crisp charcoal blazer over a silk cream blouse, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. The beige handbag with the chain bracelet rested neatly on the console table near the door—clean, empty, and free of any hidden secrets. Her phone buzzed quietly against the wooden surface, displaying a calendar notification for the upcoming federal arraignment hearing scheduled for Monday morning at nine sharp.

A soft knock sounded at the open office door, and Arthur Vance stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder stamped with the Vance Industries corporate seal.

"Good morning, Valeria," Arthur said quietly, offering a warm, respectful nod. "I trust the forensic sweep is proceeding according to plan?"

"The technicians are finishing up the final secure wipe now," Valeria replied, turning away from the window to face him. "Every trace of Julian’s unauthorized server access has been isolated, and Marcus has already submitted the complete blackmail archive directly to Agent Miller's federal task force."

Arthur walked over to the desk and placed the manila folder down beside the laptop components. "Marcus called me a few minutes ago. The federal prosecutor has officially upgraded Julian's charges from simple wire fraud and embezzlement to include interstate cyber-stalking, identity forgery, and systematic corporate extortion."

Valeria let out a slow, steady breath, feeling the final pieces of her old life fall permanently into place. "And Julian? How is he handling the new charges?"

"Not well," Arthur said grimly, shaking his head. "He spent the entire morning demanding a meeting with his defense attorney, claiming that the secondary flash drive was illegally obtained and shouldn't be admissible in court. But his lawyer already reviewed the seizure protocols and informed him that because the drive was recovered during a lawful booking search of his personal property, the evidence is entirely ironclad."

Valeria walked over to the desk and picked up the corporate folder Arthur had brought, flipping it open to reveal a set of legal documents bearing her own name, cleared of any liability and endorsed directly by the federal oversight board.

"It’s strange," Valeria murmured, tracing her fingers along the clean signature line. "For ten years, I believed I was the weak link in our marriage. I spent every single day second-guessing my decisions, my instincts, and my worth, thinking that if I just tried harder, I could fix what was broken between us."

Arthur looked at her with a deep, compassionate understanding in his eyes. "That was his greatest illusion, Valeria. He needed you to feel weak so he could feel powerful. But the moment you walked into that upscale restaurant three days ago and confronted him in front of us, the illusion broke completely."

Before Arthur could finish his thought, Valeria’s phone lit up with an urgent text message notification from Agent Miller.
