Chapter 15

The heavy oak doors of the judicial building swung open, releasing Valeria out into the bright afternoon sunlight. The crisp autumn air rushed past her face, carrying the distant, steady hum of city traffic. She stopped on the wide stone landing, pausing to adjust the strap of her beige handbag over her shoulder. The chain bracelet caught the brilliant afternoon glare, sparkling cleanly against the fabric of her charcoal blazer.
Arthur Vance and Marcus stepped out behind her, stopping a few feet away to let her take in the quiet moment of closure.
"The federal prosecutor confirmed the final sentencing guidelines twenty minutes ago," Arthur said gently, stepping up to her side and resting his hand lightly on his silver-handled cane. "With the corporate extortion charges and the identity forgery counts added to the wire fraud, Julian is looking at a minimum of twelve years in federal prison with no possibility of early parole."
Valeria turned to look at the older man, her expression entirely serene. There was no anger left in her heart, no lingering bitterness, and no trace of the heavy doubt that had defined her life for the past decade. "He built a prison out of his own lies long before the federal marshals ever put handcuffs on him," she said softly, her voice steady and clear. "I hope he finally learns how to tell the truth in there."
Marcus smiled, holding out a sleek leather portfolio containing all of her fully cleared corporate documents and newly restructured personal assets. "Your life is entirely your own now, Valeria. Vance Industries has retained your legal services as an independent corporate compliance consultant, if you’re interested in stepping back into the field on your own terms."
Valeria took the portfolio from Marcus, feeling the reassuring weight of her own future resting safely in her hands. "Thank you, Marcus. For the evidence, for the help, and for making sure the truth finally came to light."

"You did the hardest part yourself, Valeria," Arthur said, offering a warm, respectful nod. "You walked into that restaurant three days ago, looked past the lies, and refused to let anyone else write the final chapter of your story."
Valeria looked out past the courthouse steps toward the wide, open expanse of the avenue stretching out before her. The past was fully reconciled, the deceit had been stripped away, and the horizon ahead was completely clear. She took a deep, natural breath of the cool autumn air, turned her back on the courthouse steps, and began walking forward into her new life, leaving the bitterness far behind.
