Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors of the restaurant seemed miles away as Valeria walked out into the cool evening air, flanked by the two men who had just upended her entire understanding of the past decade. The streetlights flickered to life, casting long, fractured shadows across the pavement. Her mind was a chaotic storm of betrayal, disbelief, and a burning need for answers that she wasn't sure she could handle.

Julian caught up to her near the curb, his breath pluming in the crisp night air. "Valeria, wait. Just let me explain everything in private. This whole situation is a complete mess, and my father is twisting the narrative to make me look like the villain."

Valeria spun around, her eyes flashing with a sharp, defensive fire. She clutched her beige handbag tightly against her ribs. "Twisting the narrative, Julian? Your father just revealed that the wealthy family you claimed didn't exist are actually alive, well, and apparently paying close attention to every single move we make—including the messy details of our divorce."

The older man, Julian’s father, stepped out of the shadows near the valets stand. He moved with an effortless authority that commanded the space around him. "I didn't twist anything, Julian. The financial records subpeoned during your recent divorce proceedings crossed my desk this morning. You didn't just hide your family from Valeria; you systematically drained the corporate accounts tied to our holding company to fund the settlement you offered her."

Julian’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson. "That’s a lie. Those funds were entirely my own earnings from the independent consulting firm I built from scratch."

"An independent firm funded by a ghost company operating out of the Cayman Islands under my direct supervision," the older man countered, his voice chillingly calm. He pulled a thick leather folio from his breast pocket, sliding a single sheet of stiff paper out and holding it up under the streetlamp. "Valeria, look at this. The settlement agreement you signed three days ago isn't just a clean break. It’s tied directly to assets that don't legally belong to Julian. The moment the courts audit these papers, everything you received will be frozen."

Valeria stared at the paper, the neat rows of financial data blurring together under the harsh yellow light. A cold sweat broke out across the back of her neck as the terrifying realization set in that her freedom had been built on quicksand.
