Chapter 14

The federal courtroom on the fourth floor of the downtown judicial building was austere and cold, dominated by dark walnut paneling, tall vertical windows, and rows of heavy oak benches. The gallery was nearly empty, save for Marcus, Arthur Vance, and a pair of federal marshals standing quietly near the back exit.

Valeria sat at the prosecution counsel table beside Agent Miller, wearing her sharp charcoal blazer and projecting an aura of absolute, unshakable calm. Across the center aisle, Julian sat at the defense table next to a court-appointed public defender who looked visibly exhausted, flipping rapidly through a thick stack of printed discovery motions.

Julian looked drastically different from the polished, confident man who had sat across from her at the restaurant table just days ago. His grey suit was wrinkled, his blonde hair unbrushed, and dark, exhausted circles shadowed his bloodshot blue eyes. He kept glancing nervously toward the heavy oak doors at the front of the courtroom, waiting for a lifeline that was never going to arrive.

The bailiff’s sharp, resonant voice echoed off the high ceiling. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Sterling presiding."

Everyone in the courtroom stood as Judge Sterling entered from the side chambers, her black robes sweeping gracefully as she took her seat behind the elevated mahogany bench. She adjusted her reading glasses, surveyed the room with a sharp, professional gaze, and gestured for everyone to be seated.

"Please be seated," Judge Sterling said, her voice clear and commanding. "We are here today for the formal arraignment and bond review in the matter of the United States versus Julian Vance. The court has reviewed the expanded indictments, including the supplementary digital archive submitted by federal investigators."

Julian’s public defender stood up quickly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Your Honor, the defense moves to suppress the secondary flash drive recovered during the intake search, on the grounds that its contents exceed the original scope of the financial embezzlement warrant—"

Judge Sterling raised a single hand, cutting the defense attorney off instantly. "Motion denied, Counsel. When federal officers recover an encrypted blackmail archive containing corporate extortion files and forged identity records during a lawful booking procedure, the prosecution is not only permitted to review those files; they are legally obligated to incorporate them into the broader indictment."

Julian slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his hands as the full weight of the judge's ruling settled over the room.

Agent Miller leaned over toward Valeria, sliding a final piece of paperwork across the table. "The judge is about to deny bail due to the severe flight risk posed by the offshore shell accounts," she whispered quietly. "It’s almost over, Valeria."

Valeria nodded slowly, closing her folder and looking directly across the aisle at the man who had tried to destroy her life.
