Chapter 6

The digital scan of the signature card glowed mercilessly against the white wall of the conference room. Valeria stared at the looping script, her throat tightening until she could barely draw a breath. It was her handwriting—or an agonizingly precise digital replica of it.

"As you can see," Agent Miller said, her voice devoid of any warmth as she pointed a laser pen at the magnified flaw, "the authorization timestamp matches the exact minute your ex-husband accessed your home office computer network last Tuesday night. However, because the primary account holder on the receiving end is registered under a shell corporation bearing your maiden name, the legal burden of proof to separate your personal liability from his actions is going to be remarkably steep."

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished mahogany table, his voice cracking with a desperate plea. "Listen to her, Agent Miller. Valeria had no access to that server partition. I bypassed the dual-authentication protocol using my executive override code from when I still worked at the firm."

"Executive overrides leave a digital trail, Mr. Vance," the second investigator spoke up for the first time, flipping open a thick binder. "A trail that also shows three separate login attempts from an IP address registered to a residential loft on 5th Avenue—an address that happens to be Valeria's current personal mailing address."

Valeria gasped, turning her wide, terrified eyes toward Julian. "My loft? I haven't given you the security codes to my building since the day you moved out six months ago!"

Julian avoided her gaze, staring intently at the grain of the wooden table. "I still had the electronic key fob you left in the kitchen drawer when we separated last year. I didn't think it was a big deal; I just needed a quiet place to process the transfer files away from my father's corporate surveillance."

The older man stood up from his chair, his face dark with fury. He slammed his palm down onto the table with a sharp crack that made everyone jump. "You used her home to commit federal wire fraud! You absolute fool! You didn't just steal from my company; you deliberately built a trap to ensure that if the authorities caught up to the missing funds, Valeria would take the fall for the entire operation."

The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating. Valeria felt the last remnants of her composure shatter. The man she had loved, trusted, and defended for a decade had systematically mapped out her destruction to save his own skin.

Agent Miller closed her red file folder with a slow, deliberate movement. "That being the case, Mr. Vance, your admission of intentional framing changes the scope of this inquiry entirely. But before we update the charges, there is a visitor waiting in the private reception corridor who insists she has the missing hard drive."
