Chapter 9 - The Matriarch's Return

The heavy oak front doors swung open to reveal a figure so commanding that even Arthur Sterling and Julian Vance immediately straightened their postures in respectful silence. Beatrice Vance, the formidable matriarch of the entire Vance empire, stepped across the threshold. Though advanced in age, her silver hair was pulled back into a severe, flawless bun, and her eyes pierced through the room like shattered glass. She leaned heavily on a carved ebony walking cane, each tap of the wood against the marble floor sounding like a ticking countdown to Elena’s total destruction.

Elena Vance stood paralyzed, her hands still gripping the edge of the mahogany coffee table. Her lungs refused to draw in air. Beatrice Vance was supposed to be in Geneva receiving experimental medical treatments—at least, that was what Elena’s private investigators had confirmed just three days prior. Beatrice’s sudden, ghostly appearance at the exact apex of the wedding disaster could mean only one thing: the entire trap had been coordinated from the very top.

"You look as though you've seen a ghost, Elena," Beatrice’s voice cut through the cavernous living room like dry ice, smooth, sharp, and dripping with thinly veiled contempt. She didn't spare her own son, Julian, a single glance as she swept past him toward the center of the room. "Did you honestly believe a woman of my standing would leave the fate of the Vance dynasty in the hands of a social-climbing amateur?"

Beatrice stopped directly in front of Elena, towering over her despite her hunched posture and age. The matriarch reached out with one wrinkled, ring-adorned hand and gently touched the cover of the opened, brass-locked journal sitting on the table.

"I wrote the rules of this family, Elena," Beatrice continued, her voice dropping into a dangerous, hypnotic register. "Every asset, every share, every brick of this estate was built on blood, sacrifice, and absolute loyalty. You thought you could infiltrate our bloodline by seducing my son with a manufactured fairytale? You didn't even bother to check who Mariza really is, did you?"

Elena’s lower lip quivered violently. She glanced sideways at Mariza, who was still holding little Valentina securely against her black maid uniform. The pieces were finally snapping together in Elena’s horrified mind—the uncanny resemblance, the instant protection from Julian, the legal documents waiting in the wings.

"She’s... she’s not just a maid," Elena whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth.

"No, she is not," Beatrice replied coldly, turning her head slightly toward Mariza with a look of profound respect. "Mariza is my late brother’s eldest daughter—and Valentina’s great-aunt. Which makes this sweet little girl not a bastard brat, as you so elegantly shouted earlier, but the primary bloodline heir to the entire Vance conglomerate, outranking both Julian and myself under the ancient family charter."

Elena felt the floor completely drop away beneath her feet. The marriage was a sham, the fortune was completely out of reach, and she had spent the entire evening insulting the actual blood royalty of the empire she had schemed years to conquer.

"And now," Beatrice added, turning her cold, sharp gaze back to Elena while gesturing subtly to Arthur Sterling, "we are going to discuss the legal consequences of grand theft, corporate espionage, and trespassing under false pretenses."

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, unzipping a second leather briefcase and pulling out a pair of polished steel handcuffs.
