Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

The sharp, insistent chime of the front doorbell reverberated through the sprawling luxury living room, breaking the heavy, suffocating silence. Elena Vance stared down at the second document with the red seal sitting next to her opened journal on the mahogany coffee table. Her chest rose and fell in jagged, uneven breaths. The red seal belonged to the Vance Group's primary corporate litigation firm—a division that only mobilized when a hostile takeover or severe breach of contract was detected.

"What is that?" Elena asked, her voice trembling uncontrollably as she pointed a shaking finger at the red seal. "We just signed the custody addendum, Julian. The wedding reception is supposed to start in thirty minutes. You can't possibly—"

"I can do whatever I damn well please with my company, my house, and my life, Elena," Julian interrupted, his tone an unyielding wall of absolute authority. He didn't bother looking at her; instead, he nodded slightly toward Mariza. "Answer the door. Tell our guests that the bride and groom are currently occupied with... urgent family restructuring."

Mariza adjusted little Valentina on her hip, her expression cautious yet deeply intrigued. She shifted the little girl securely, turned on her heel in her crisp black maid uniform, and walked toward the massive double front doors. The bell chimed a second time, sharper and more demanding.

Elena watched Mariza walk away, panic clawing at her throat. She looked back at Julian, her eyes wide with desperate realization. "You planned this. From the very beginning. You found my journal weeks ago, didn't you? You knew about my past all along, and you let me walk down that aisle anyway!"

Julian finally met her gaze, a faint, sardonic smile playing at the corner of his lips. "I needed a legally binding marriage contract with a forfeiture clause, Elena. And you were so blinded by your greed for the Vance fortune that you signed away your right to contest anything the moment your ambition overrode your common sense."

Before Elena could scream or lunge at him, the heavy front doors swung wide open.

Standing on the grand porch under the crisp autumn sunlight was not a caterer or a wedding guest. It was a tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, accompanied by two stern-looking men holding heavy leather briefcases. It was Arthur Sterling, the founding senior partner of Sterling & Cole, and the most feared corporate attorney in the Northeast.

Arthur stepped into the foyer without waiting for an invitation, his sharp gray eyes scanning the opulent living room before landing squarely on Elena.

"Good evening, Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying the polished confidence of a man who owned judges and politicians alike. He stopped ten feet away from the coffee table, unbuttoning his suit jacket. "I trust the preliminary document review went smoothly? Because we have a slight procedural complication regarding the true ownership of the Vance estate, and it involves the little girl currently standing in the hallway."

Elena’s breath hitched completely. She whipped her head around to stare at Mariza and Valentina, her mind racing into total chaos as a horrifying thought took root.

"What do you mean, her?" Elena shrieked, pointing wildly at Valentina. "She's just a maid's relative! What does she have to do with the corporate ownership?"

Arthur Sterling offered a cold, humorless smile, pulling a pristine manila folder from his briefcase and laying it flat upon the table. "That, Mrs. Vance, is precisely what you are about to find out—and why your marriage certificate was rendered null and void the moment you signed it."
