Chapter 5 - The Locked Diary

The air in the luxury living room grew instantly heavier, charged with a volatile electricity that seemed to make the crystal chandelier hum with a sharper, harsher vibration. Julian Vance stopped dead in his tracks. His dark eyes flicked from Mariza’s composed face to Elena’s paralyzed, ash-white expression. The illusion of a perfect wedding day was completely shattered, replaced by the raw, jagged edges of a dangerous confrontation.
"What are you talking about, Mariza?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that demanded absolute obedience without raising the volume.
Before Mariza could pull the weathered leather journal from her pocket, Elena lunged forward with desperate speed, attempting to snatch the hidden object away. But Julian was faster. With a fluid, powerful motion, he intercepted Elena’s arm, gripping her wrist in a tight, unyielding vice. His fingers clamped down just hard enough to immobilize her, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he stared down at his bride.
"Enough games, Elena," Julian hissed softly, his face inches from hers. "What is in that pocket?"
Mariza didn't wait for permission. She reached into her black uniform pocket, pulled out the small, brass-locked journal, and extended it toward Julian on the flat of her palm. The faded gold initials E.V. caught the brilliant light of the chandelier, glinting like a dark omen.
Julian released Elena’s wrist instantly, as if the contact burned him. He reached out and picked up the journal, turning it over in his large, capable hands. His thumb traced the embossed initials slowly. A muscle ticked along his jawline.
"Where did you find this?" Julian demanded, looking directly at Mariza while keeping his periphery locked on Elena, who was now backed up against the marble-topped coffee table, breathing in shallow, panicked gasps.
"Valentina found it tucked beneath the base of the grandfather clock in the east hallway," Mariza answered steadily, adjusting the little girl on her hip. "Right where Madam Vance supposedly dropped her bouquet yesterday."
Julian’s gaze snapped back to Elena. The silence that followed was deafening. He didn't need to ask if the initials belonged to her; the sheer terror radiating from Elena’s wide, dilated pupils was all the confirmation he needed.
"Open it," Elena whispered, her voice cracking, completely devoid of its previous arrogance. She stared at the brass lock with unmasked horror. "Julian, please. Don't open that. It’s... it’s from a time before I knew you. It contains things out of context. Lies. Mistakes I made when I was desperate."
Julian stared at the small, sturdy brass lock holding the pages shut. A cold, cynical smile touched his lips—a smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"I built my entire business empire on uncovering hidden liabilities, Elena," Julian said softly, his thumb pressing hard against the metal latch. "Let's see what kind of liability my new wife has been keeping locked away."

With a sharp, metallic snap, Julian forced the brass latch open, the old hinges groaning as the front cover fell backward to reveal the cramped, frantic handwriting inside.
