Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Floorboards

The golden nib of the fountain pen gleamed under the harsh glare of the crystal chandelier, casting an accusing reflection across Elena Vance’s pale face. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct screamed at her to rip the legal document to shreds, to throw the ring across the room, and to scream at the man who had so effortlessly dismantled her life in a matter of minutes. But ambition was a heavy anchor, and walking away penniless was a fate far worse than swallowing her pride.
With trembling fingers, Elena reached out and grasped the heavy gold pen. The cold metal sent a shiver straight up her spine.
"You are making a grave mistake, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice tight with suppressed venom as the nib hovered just centimeters above the signature line. "People like me don't forgive, and we certainly don't forget being played for fools."
Julian didn't flinch. His face remained an unreadable mask of corporate calculation. He stood completely still, his hands clasped behind his back, watching his newly minted wife with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope.
"I didn't play you, Elena. I simply omitted a few details that didn't require your approval," Julian answered smoothly, shifting his gaze away from her to check his expensive wristwatch. "Now, sign the addendum. Our wedding guests will be arriving at the grand ballroom in less than forty minutes, and I expect my wife to wear a smile that reaches her eyes."
Elena pressed the pen hard against the paper, her hand shaking so violently that her signature looked jagged and frantic. The moment the ink dried, Julian snatched the document away, sliding it back into his leather portfolio with practiced efficiency. Without another word to Elena, he turned on his heel and walked toward the grand staircase, leaving the tension in the room thick enough to choke on.
Mariza exhaled a long, shaky breath, her grip on little Valentina loosening just enough for the child to shift. The small girl’s stuffed rabbit slipped from her tired arms, tumbling silently onto the plush rug near the base of the heavy grandfather clock. Valentina let out a soft cry and dropped to her knees, scrambling to retrieve her only comfort. As she reached under the antique wooden base of the clock, her small fingers brushed against something metallic and cold that didn't belong to the toy.
Mariza froze. Her eyes darted anxiously toward Elena, who was still standing by the coffee table, breathing heavily as she tried to compose herself.
"Valentina, honey, leave it," Mariza whispered urgently, bending down to scoop the child up.
But it was too late. Valentina pulled her hand out from beneath the clock base, holding up a small, weathered leather journal bound with a heavy brass lock. On the cover, embossed in faded gold lettering, were the initials E.V.—and beneath it, a date from five years ago, long before Elena and Julian had ever met.
Elena’s eyes snapped toward the child. She froze, the color draining entirely from her face for the second time that evening.
"Give that to me," Elena commanded, her voice dropping an octave as she lunged forward across the marble floor.

Before Elena's fingers could graze the leather, Mariza snatched the journal from the little girl's hands, tucking it swiftly inside the deep pocket of her black maid uniform with a look of quiet defiance.
