Chapter 11 - The Hidden Frequency

The tiny, blinking red light embedded deep within the single-threaded ear of the worn gray stuffed rabbit pulsed with a mechanical rhythm that felt entirely out of place in the opulent luxury living room. Mariza dropped her professional composure instantly, gasping aloud as she lunged forward to scoop little Valentina back into her arms, pulling the child away from Elena with frantic speed.

"Valentina, step away!" Mariza’s voice cracked with raw terror, her eyes locked on the blinking red light.

Julian Vance reacted with instantaneous, lethal efficiency. Dropping his customary cold demeanor, he crossed the marble floor in three long strides, pushing Elena violently out of the way and grabbing the stuffed rabbit directly from the child's hand. He ripped the fabric of the ear apart with his bare fingers, exposing a small, high-frequency audio transmitter wired tightly into the cotton stuffing.

"What is this?" Beatrice demanded, her authority instantly flaring as she slammed her ebony cane hard against the stone floor. She glared at Elena, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "Is this another one of your little insurance policies, Elena? A live feed broadcasting every word spoken in this house directly to your co-conspirators?"

Elena stumbled backward against the marble fireplace, gasping for air as she stared at the exposed wire in Julian’s hand. Her mind raced frantically, trying to assemble the pieces, but genuine panic paralyzed her thoughts.

"No! I swear to God, no!" Elena sobbed, her manicured hands flying to her face as tears smeared her makeup entirely. "I didn't put that in there! I swear on my life, I didn't know about any transmitter!"

Julian brought the transmitter close to his ear, listening intently to the faint static hiss before pressing a tiny button on its side to trace the signal frequency. The device emitted a sharp, high-pitched beep that synchronized with a hidden receiver somewhere in the east hallway. A cold sweat broke out along Julian’s jawline. He recognized the encryption protocol instantly. It wasn't Elena’s technology; it belonged to someone much higher up in the Vance corporate structure—someone who had been using Elena as a disposable pawn all along.

"It’s not transmitting to her handlers," Julian said grimly, his dark eyes darting toward the grand staircase. "The frequency is linked to the primary server room in the basement. Someone inside this house right now is listening to every single word we've said tonight."

Arthur Sterling immediately dropped the handcuffs, snapping his briefcase shut and pulling a secure satellite phone from his suit pocket. "Shall I lock down the perimeter and cut all external network feeds, Mr. Vance?"

"Do it now," Julian commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Lock down every exit, disable the elevators, and secure the server room. Nobody leaves this estate alive until I find out who is pulling the strings."

Before Arthur could punch the emergency override code into his satellite phone, the brilliant crystal chandelier above them flickered violently twice and then exploded into a shower of thousands of glittering glass shards that rained down across the marble floor. Total, pitch-black darkness consumed the room, followed immediately by the terrifying sound of heavy footsteps sprinting down the grand staircase toward them.
